Hello! My name is Mrs. Firmes. This will be my 17th year in Amesbury, and my 28th year in the teaching profession.
As the seventh grade special education teacher, I provide students with specialized instruction in the area of Math in the small group setting. Instruction focuses on skills related to grade level standards presented at a modified level. If gaps in learning emerge, students work to develop necessary prerequisite skills. Varied learning experiences allow students to receive the style of instruction they require while providing exposure to grade level units of study. Empowering students with mathematics skills not only instills a unique confidence, but fulfills a critical real world competence.
Additionally, I co teach with grade level math teachers in the inclusion math classes within the general education classroom. This powerful team approach benefits all students as material can be presented in a variety of ways, targeting different learning styles.
I look forward to working together with students, their parents, and/or caregivers in taking the leap from sixth grade to seventh, where greater independence and responsibility are developed and expected.
