Q: Where do I find everything?
A: We have tried to simplify things so you only need to go to two places:
This Google Site: You will find all instructions for learning activities as well as resources that will help learners.
Google Classroom: Students will access online tasks from their whānau teacher.
Q: My child keeps forgetting their logins or is having trouble logging in without support - What can I do to make this easier?
A: Bookmark the pages that your child needs once they are logged into the website. To bookmark, click the star in the address bar. Select bookmarks bar. If your child already has too many bookmarks, it may not show in the bar. You can click the '>>' symbol at the end of the bar, find the bookmark and drag it to the bar. This way, to access the things they need, students can click on the bookmark.
Q: How can I support my child with their writing?
A: On the writing resources pages you will find a number of teacher videos and youtube videos that can support your child. Some other tips are:
Encourage your child to choose the option that they feel most excited about
Ask your child questions:
What else can you tell me?
What happened next?
Have you put in your full stops and capital letters?
What is your favourite sentence or word?
Can you change a word to make it more interesting?
If your child is having trouble typing on their chromebook they could:
Write in an exercise book or piece of paper
Use voice typing. In Google Slides, this types what you speak into the speaker notes. You can then cut and paste it into the slide. To use this tool: Click tools, voice type speaker notes, click the microphone to record.
Q: We are worried about too much screen time - what can we do?
A: We are aware that distance learning means more time on screens for our learners. We recommend students taking 'brain breaks' where they choose an activity off screen. This can be anything they enjoy! Bike riding, scooter riding, lego, colouring, reading a book, drawing, playing a board game etc...
You may also choose the have your child complete their learning activities in a book and then taking a photo to share with their core teacher for feedback.
Q: How can I motivate my child to complete their learning tasks?
A:
You could work together to create a plan for the day. This plan could consist of the learning tasks your child wants to complete that day and a range of brain breaks. These brain breaks should be something fun that your child will look forward to. E.g. Playing with lego, riding their bike/scooter, baking, creating/colouring etc.
You could also use a timer. E.g. Alongside you, your child could choose how long they will work on their writing for. Once the timer has gone off, they can go complete a brain break or can do activity of their choice. You could use the diary slides in the online workbook for this. You may set this timer for 10-15 minutes.
Encourage your child to upload or complete their learning tasks in their workbook. This means they will receive feedback from their core teacher. We know that feedback is a really great motivator for students!
Use a two task system: First...(key learning task) then...(fun child chosen activity). Alternate between the two.
Q: What is number strategy?
A: Number strategy: We teach students a range of strategies and ways to solve problems when we are at school. For these online packages, we will focus on a different strategy for each band each week. Encourage your child to have a go at trying these new strategies rather than the one they already know really well.
