There is a lot of trash in Iowa's local rivers, which affects water quality. That's why our team plans to create a Junior Skunk River Navy to keep up the hard work done by the Skunk River Navy . The Skunk River Navy is an all day event where students pick up trash from the South Skunk River which runs through Story County and the City of Ames. This event was lead by Professor Jim Colbert . Since the Skunk River Navy, which was made in 1998 about 2100 volunteers picked up over 72 tons of trash from the Skunk River and other tributaries .
One large problem in Ames, and the whole world, is water pollution. People throw garbage in the streams and make it inhospitable for wildlife. Our Lego League team, the CyBots, are planning to locally change the amount of trash dumped in our local streams. Our main plan is to use this website to document, and make people aware of the amount of garbage being dumped in our streams, and what we can do locally to decrease the amount of plastic and improve water quality . Our main focus is College Creek.
