Section 1: Inquiry Question and Concept Exploration
Explanation of the guiding question or concept
Inquiry Statement: How can layering, color blending, and composition choices transform an everyday object into a compelling and realistic work of art? My inquiry explores how simple, everyday objects can become visually captivating through artistic techniques. I chose candy because it’s colorful, shiny, and familiar—yet challenging to make look realistic. I experimented with layering and blending colors to capture light reflections, depth, and transparency. The goal was to make something ordinary feel visually rich and detailed by carefully studying form, shadow, and composition. Through this process, I discovered how realism depends on observation, patience, and how small adjustments in color and value can change the entire mood of the piece.
Section 2: Connection
Cultural, historical, and artistic influences with critical evaluation.
Artistic Connection: N/A
Personal Connection: Reference Images of Candy (Day 3): I used reference images of real candy and arranged them into different compositions to test which one looked the most dynamic. Candy reminds me of childhood and simple pleasures, so using it as my subject matter made the piece both nostalgic and fun to work on. Photographing and studying real candy helped me understand how light, shadow, and color interact to create realism.

To prepare for my final artwork, I practiced several studies to understand how light affects form and surface. I started with a value scale to practice gradual shading, then created sphere studies to test how highlights and shadows transition. After that, I worked on a gummy candy study to focus on texture and translucency. These experiments helped me improve control over layering colored pencils and blending, which made the candy appear glossy and three-dimensional. Each study built my confidence and guided my approach for the final piece.

Once I finished experimenting, I began the final piece by sketching the candy composition lightly in pencil. I used colored pencils in layers, starting from lighter tones and building depth with darker shades. I blended each layer carefully to create smooth transitions and realistic textures. Throughout the process, I documented each stage with photos to show how the colors and highlights developed over time. Seeing the gradual transformation helped me reflect on how blending and layering truly bring realism to life.

Visual Requirements:
Title:
Size: 18x18
Date of Completion: 11/10/15
Why:I made this artwork to show how even something as simple as candy can look powerful and detailed when studied closely, layered carefully, and drawn with attention to realism.
Section 6: Communicate and Reflect
Challenges, successes, and self-evaluation of how the artwork aligns with the inquiry question.
Reflection Notes: Any final thoughts you think I should know about the work

This piece challenged me to be patient and precise, especially when layering colors to create realistic shine and depth. One of the hardest parts was blending smoothly without over-saturating the paper, but through practice, I learned how to control pressure and balance warm and cool tones. I’m proud of how realistic the candy looks and how the colors stand out. This work helped me see how technique and observation can transform something ordinary into something visually striking. It also made me appreciate how much planning, testing, and layering go into achieving realism.
