Learn names, use names, pronounce names correctly.
Learn some of the details: Adults, siblings, pets, likes/dislikes, skills, hopes, fears, experiences, ...
Look for things in you have in common; point out commonalities with other students.
Listen to your students and listen to their stories (then, share your stories).
Focus on the positive; talk about goals for next time.
Celebrate their work, their growth, their accomplishments.
Spend time with them in class, at lunch, at their events.
Write positive notes to the parents/guardians.
Have routines and rituals in class: Be positively predictable, someone they can count on.
Have a sense of humor and don't take things personally. Every day is a new beginning.
