Edition 12. published 24 July 2025
Dear Ambler families,
Here we are at the end of another school year of what has been a truly fantastic year. This year, we were delighted to share the Ofsted inspection that rated the school Outstanding - a reflection of the excellence in teaching, behaviour of children, and the warmth and support of our school community. I'm so proud of the school - children, staff and parents - all who have ‘achieved more’ using their DREAMS qualities.
It is the time of year we say goodbye to our amazing Year 6’s. They excelled in their end of year SATs results, proving to themselves that they have come a long way in their learning. The end of year production was phenomenal showcasing the talent of the children. They have been a joy and will be missed.
I want to say a HUGE thank you to Friends of Ambler who brought the school community together for a spectacular scorching summer fair, raising essential funds that support all children to access enrichment opportunities - we couldn’t do the extras without your support!
We also say goodbye to some amazing staff at Ambler - thank you for all your hard work and dedication to making it the absolute best for the children here at Ambler.
As we head to the end of this academic year, let’s celebrate all the accomplishments and look forward to the memories still to come. Here’s to a brilliant summer finish—and an even brighter new school year.
Warmest wishes,
Sandy McNicholl
Headteacher

As the 2025 school year draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on the incredible journey our Year 6 pupils have had. This year’s cohort has been truly exceptional, demonstrating not only academic brilliance but also resilience, creativity and a wonderful sense of camaraderie. We couldn’t be prouder of each and every one of them.
After months of hard work and determination, they rose to the challenge of SATs and their dedication, focus and effort paid off. We are delighted with how well they performed. More importantly, they approached the tests with a positive attitude and supported one another throughout.
Once SATs were behind them, the fun really began! The children enjoyed a well-deserved trip to Chessington World of Adventures, where they laughed, screamed (especially on Mandrill Mayhem!) and made lasting memories with friends. They will also never forget some of our encounters with the giraffes and gorillas!
Back at school, the Year 6's turned their attention to the arts and put on an exceptional production called Time Lord. Their performances were captivating - from hilarious moments and beautiful singing to impressive rapping and energetic dancing. The talent and confidence on display were inspiring and many parents, students and staff were left in stitches and in awe. Some of the audience reviews were: "It was so much better than the last professional production we went to" and "Absolutely brilliant, even the year 3's were on the edge of their seats".
The children also took part in a leavers’ graduation assembly, which was an emotional yet celebratory event. Together, we looked back at their time in primary school, shared fond memories and recognised the personal growth and friendships they’ve developed along the way.
Finally, the Year 6 Prom was the perfect way to end their time with us. Dressed to impress, the children arrived in style and lit up the dance floor with their moves. It was an afternoon of music, dancing, laughter and joy - a fitting send-off for a group of pupils whom we cherish.
As our Year 6 pupils move on to their next adventure in secondary school, we want to say a huge thank you for all the memories, hard work, and fun they’ve brought to Ambler. We know they will go on to achieve amazing things and we wish them every success for the future. We will miss you so please come back and visit us next year!

The Ambler community enjoyed another wonderful summer art exhibition to showcase and celebrate the fantastic creativity and artwork of our children from babies to year 6! Thank you to everyone who came along to admire and enjoy the vibrant and imaginative work of our young artists and raise funds to help art at Ambler continue to flourish.
We are thrilled to share that our Year 5 School Councillors were invited to a special awards ceremony at the Edmonton EcoPark, where they proudly received an award for helping our school reduce waste. This recognition celebrates all the hard work and commitment the children have shown throughout the year to make our school more environmentally friendly.
Over the past year, we have made several positive changes, including ensuring that every classroom has a recycling bin and adding a food waste bin to our playground. These small but important steps have helped us build better habits across the school.
In July, we carried out another waste audit—and the results were fantastic! We have significantly reduced the amount of waste we produce, and we are determined to keep this up next year! If you’d like to find out more about our eco journey, be sure to pick up a copy of Islington Life or view here.
Ambler has participated in the TastEd programme for a number of years. Recently, we were recognised and asked to become one of 5 schools that are now TastEd Ambassadors, after successfully introducing the programme in the children centre and the primary school.
Ambler's Sports Day was yet again a day of fun in the sun! With clear skies and high spirits, every child in Key Stage 1 and 2 rose to the occasion, demonstrating all their DREAMS qualities — Determination, Resilience, Empathy, Ambition, Motivation, and Self-belief.
From sprints to sack races, the levels of teamwork and communication across all activities were truly impressive. It was wonderful to see children supporting one another, giving their all, and showing what it means to be part of the Ambler community.
A huge well done to every participant — you should all be very proud of your effort, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm.
🎉 A special congratulations goes to House Donaldson, who took home the trophy this year! Your hard work, unity, and drive paid off — what a fantastic achievement!
Thank you to all the staff, volunteers, and families who helped make the day such a success.
Here’s to another brilliant Sports Day in the books!
ARSENAL FOUNDATION LEAGUE FINALS
Congratulations to Ambler's Year 5 & 6 Boys Football Team, who were invited to attend the Arsenal Foundation League (AFL) Finals Day, as a reward for finishing 2nd in the AFL South Division.
Our boys did brilliantly to beat Yerbury in the semi final 2-1, before losing out to Canonbury in the final 0-4. Well done to the team for bringing home the silver medal- an unprecedented achievement for Ambler in the AFL.
Also, a special mention goes to Ellie, who was awarded the Golden Boot for scoring the most goals in the Girls league (14 goals in 8 matches). Well done Ellie!
ARSENAL HUB VISIT
A group of Year 3 & 4 children attended an event at The Arsenal Hub in celebration of legendary ex-manager Herbert Chapman. The children enjoyed a football session in the Hub, a reading lesson inspired by the great man and a tour of the famous marble halls at the old Higbury stadium.
PLATFORM CRICKET FESTIVAL
Congratulations to Ambler's Year 4 & 5 cricket team who took part in the Platform Cricket Festival at Highbury Fields. They worked extremely well as a team; demonstrating their DREAMS qualities to finish 2nd and bring home the silver medal. What a great effort and achievement!
Also a special mEntion to Toto, who won the Player of the Tournament Award. Well done Toto!
GO APE TRIP
An amazing day, with all children pushing out of their comfort zones to complete a challenging obstacle. It was lovely to see the children supporting each other through the difficult parts and laughing through the rest. A true embodiment of Ambler Family.
Our first whole-school celebration for the new academic year will be the One Ambler Community Celebration on Friday 26th September. How exciting! This will be a free event from 3.30 to 5.30pm in the Lodge playground.
It will be a grand coming-together of all our families and cultures, from babies to Year 6 and a great way to meet and mingle with Ambler families and staff. We’ll be sharing delicious food from around the world and hopefully some music and lots of other fun activities. We'll need your help to do this!
Can you bring or share food? Or help decorate the playground or help clear away? Any offers or fun and community-building activities are from welcome, from henna, face painting to performances and workshop! Simply fill in this form To let us know.
We're excited to launch the new Black History theme for the next academic year: Black and Proud, Here and Now.
We'll be celebrating the people, places and cultures that make Islington such a fantastic place to be. Activities will begin straight away in September, with drama and dance workshops and performances, plus learning in history, reading and writing.
There will be lots of opportunities for parents and carers to join in. Can you come and talk to the children and show them what it means to be 'Black and Proud, Here and Now'? We're looking for Black parents, carers, family members and friends who can be local role models. You could talk about your family history, culture, work or special skill, or your experiences of growing up Black. Or you could come and read a story to your child's class. Look out for a parent/carer call out in early September.
Our grand Playground Performance, showcasing our Black history singing and dancing, will be on Friday 17th October. Save the date! This year, we're getting families involved in the performance too! Come to our free parent/carer carnival dance workshop on Thursday 18th September to learn all the moves.
We ended the year on a high with our Summer Spelling Bee. The competition was tight and the words were tricker than ever, with the introduction of the 'Ultimate Spellings'. Everyone who took part did incredibly well. Felix G won the Year 3 & 4 round and Craig won our Year 5 & 6 round.
Year 5 travelled to the South Bank to visit Shakespeare's famous Globe Theatre. We enjoyed a beautiful sunny day by the Thames, exploring many historical landmarks, including St. Paul's Cathedral, The Tate Modern and the Globe Theatre itself. On arrival, both classes took part in Macbeth workshops, where they had the opportunity to act out scenes from the Scottish Play. The workshop facilitators were full of praise for our children's efforts and were highly impressed with their enthusiasm and knowledge of the play. We then got to explore the stunning theatre and learnt all about its remarkable history.
Year 5 were invited to visit St. Aloysius Secondary School to take part in some KS3 taster sessions.
5B took part in a practical science investigation focused on the digestive system, made fruit smoothies during a fun food technology session and then designed packaging for their product before pitching it to the class.
5G took part in a history lesson focused on portraits, a geography session on maps and landmarks and a fun P.E session. We then had lunch in Waterlow Park before returning to school.
Year 4 enjoyed a trip to Kenwood House as part of their 'writing through art' unit. They studied four different paintings and created a range of outcomes including a diary entry, an advertisement poster and a debate.
The children discussed the painters, time periods and themes of the artwork. At Kenwood House, they were able to showcase their knowledge of the paintings and experience the artwork in real life which they were very excited about.
We do a lot of work at this time of year to prepare our children for change - new teachers, new classmates, and even new schools for year 6. There is also change among staff.
Along with some sadness, we share our immense gratitude for those leaving Ambler.

And finally, congratulations to Eva Long and Alex Chan for their respective new roles as apprentice teacher and baby room lead.
Congratulations to Inayah from 5G for winning our group creative writing competition. Each child was given the same starting and end sentence, and tasked with writing an engaging short story. The judges were impressed with all entries, however Inayah's creative writing style shone through.
We were incredibly impressed by children's determination, progress and skill over a year of Music in the Morning, which culminated in a magical concert towards the end of term. It was great for them to work towards the concerts and have the opportunity to perform to their parents/carers.
Thanks to our wonderful teachers, Laila, Phoebe and Sophie. Sadly, it is Laila's last year as coordinator - she has made a huge contribution to the school since 2018. Thank you!
The enrichment club list for next term (Y1-Y6) is being finalised and will be shared shorty. Please look out for the email and complete the form before the deadline. Clubs will start from Monday 8 September, but wraparound childcare (stay & play, extended day) will be running from Wednesday 3 September.
Please note that charges will be increasing by 50p per session, from September. This will support the sustainability of the provision, but was not a decision made lightly.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
The law requires parents/carers to ensure their child’s regular attendance at school.
Please notify the school if your child cannot attend for any reason (each day they are absence)
Explain the reasons for your child’s absence. Please be specific.
Ensure your child is not absent where this can be avoided (e.g. minor illnesses).
There are 175 non-school days for holidays, family time etc. We do not expect parents/carers to take children out of school for a holiday or other term-time leave. Absence may be granted by the headteacher in exceptional circumstances.
If you feel it is absolutely unavoidable to request term-time leave:
You must apply for leave in advance (request forms are available from the school office)
Submit your application at least 4 weeks in advance of the proposed leave dates
Apply before booking your travel .
If you withdraw your child during term time and the absence has not been agreed by the Headteacher, it is unauthorised leave, which may lead to a fine of up to £160 and/or court proceedings.
We understand that every family’s circumstances are different and subject to change. Please email the school office to arrange a meeting with Mrs McNicholl if you have any concerns you would like to discuss.
This half term, we were pleased to share our journey so far with our link governors, who reviewed our successes and offered valuable insight and ideas to support our ongoing development. Following a strong focus on staff wellbeing in my first year of taking on the role, and parental wellbeing this year, the key focus for the next academic year will be on child wellbeing. I’ve been working closely with staff to explore what practices have had the most positive impact while also being manageable in terms of workload. These discussions will be instrumental in shaping our future plans.
We also recently completed our final staff survey of the year, which will play a key role in informing our action plan to support all of our staff here at Ambler.
Additionally, we received the results from our Parent Audit, and we’re grateful for the overwhelmingly positive feedback, as well as the thoughtful suggestions shared. Based on this input, we’re excited to implement a number of new actions next year.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to build a happy, healthy, and thriving school community. Enjoy your restful summer!
At Ambler, we know that strong partnerships between school and home are key to supporting every child’s development and wellbeing. We are committed to listening, reflecting, and improving based on the feedback we receive from you.
To strengthen our work with families, we invited a team from the borough to carry out a Parent Engagement Audit. As part of this, they spoke with members of the senior leadership team (SLT), parents, carers and our wellbeing team. Here is a summary of what they found:
What’s Working Well
The borough’s audit highlighted the following strengths:
Staff are attuned to family needs and go the extra mile to offer support
There are plenty of inclusive opportunities for parents to get involved
Good use of external support services, including translators and early help
Strong relationships between staff and families
Coffee mornings and workshops are valued by families
Clear opportunities for parents to give feedback and share ideas
Areas We’re Working On
We’re taking steps to improve in the following areas, based on your feedback:
Make communication more consistent and easier to access
Share more about the wellbeing support happening in all year groups
Clarify how bullying is handled, including what children learn about it
Make it clearer how to contact your child’s class teacher
Reshare where to find the parent handbook
Expand sports and physical activity opportunities
Offer workshops at flexible times
Improve the transition from Reception to Year 1
Keep wellbeing a priority all the way through to Year 6
Thank you to all the parents who took part in the audit and shared their feedback. We are grateful for your continued involvement and ideas, it’s your voice that helps us grow stronger as a school community.
EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOTHERAPY
It has been another busy and fulfilling term supporting children, families and staff at Ambler with their mental health and well-being. Latoya and I have finished facilitating our summer term family group which we enjoyed thoroughly. As usual, the children amazed us with their reflections and growing emotional intelligence, and the parents all supported the children on this journey- the motto of the group is "it takes a village to raise a child" and the group, again, proved this to be true.
I will be starting a new family group in the Autumn Term with Chloe who is returning from maternity leave. I have also been running 'strategy groups' throughout the year to support children with their confidence, resilience and emotional regulation,as well as continuing 1:1 therapy sessions.
As a pastoral team, we have run multiple transition groups throughout the summer term. These groups have helped Year 6 children prepare to say goodbye to Ambler and get ready for their onward journeys. Please contact me and/or the pastoral team via the school office if you have any concerns regarding your child's mental health and well-being and the pastoral team will do our best to offer support, guidance and advice where possible.
As we reach the end of another incredible academic year, it’s a great time to reflect on all the amazing things we have achieved together in EYFS. We’ve made so many special memories this year and it’s been a joy to watch every child progress and develop a love of learning. Our work has also been acknowledged in several notable ways throughout this academic year.
Here are some of my highlights:
📚 Promoting a Love of Reading
We successfully embedded a culture of reading for pleasure through a series of author visits, which have sparked significant enthusiasm among our youngest learners.
Renowned children’s book illustrator Angela Brooksbank has visited us on a number of occasions over the last few years, providing children with lots of free exciting learning experiences, including immersive storytelling and art sessions.
Angela dedicated her new book, 'M is for Mango', to the children of Ambler Children's Centre. We are incredibly honoured at such a meaningful and special gesture.
🖊️ Boys’ Writing and Borough Recognition
Our targeted strategies to engage boys in writing, through purposeful, play-based contexts and topic-linked provocations, have resulted in measurable improvements.
We were awarded a borough-wide recognition for excellence in boys’ writing, and our team has now presented our successful practice at two borough events, sharing our approach with other settings.
🍎 Healthy Early Years London (HEYL) Award
We are delighted to have achieved the HEYL Bronze Award, recognising our commitment to promoting physical health, emotional wellbeing, and positive lifestyle habits from the earliest stage.
🫑 Taste Education Ambassadors
We have been recognised for our commitment to early sensory food education through Ambassador status!
TastEd is a sensory food education programme that helps children explore fruit and vegetables using all five senses, without pressure to eat. It supports children to become more confident, curious, and independent around food, while also developing language, emotional resilience, and healthy habits.
Thank you to the dedicated staff, supportive families, and most importantly, our wonderful children for making this year so special.
As we celebrate the wonderful achievements of all our children, we also look ahead. We’re excited for our nursery children who are ready to take that next big step into Reception, and for our Reception children as they confidently move on to Year 1. We’ll miss them, but we know they’re ready for new adventures!
Wishing you all a happy, safe, and restful summer. I can’t wait to see what next year brings!
Best wishes
CÍara
Our baby room was featured in the May issue of Nursery World! The article highlights the journey we have been on to redesign the space, the curriculum and key policies. You can read the article here.
Following this, we’re incredibly proud to be shortlisted for The Nursery World Awards 2025, recognising our outstanding work with babies and children under two. We were selected from hundreds of early years settings across the country!
This is a huge honour and a testament to the love, care, dedication and expertise our team puts into supporting your little ones during these important early years.
STAFFING UPDATE
Alex has been promoted as our new Baby Room Lead. Alex joined as an EYE in January and brought great energy and experience to our under-twos provision.
We will also welcome a Senior Practitioner, Monica, who is a fully qualified teacher, to our nursery class in September.
This term in Reception, we’ve been learning all about the big wide world and how we can take care of it. The children were especially moved by the story Rang-Tan in My Bedroom, which helped us explore the impact of palm oil on the rainforest and the animals who live there. Inspired to take action, the children wrote letters to big companies, asking them to be more responsible with the ingredients they use.
It was wonderful to see how engaged and passionate the children became. They carefully checked ingredients on food items both at school and at home, looking for palm oil and making thoughtful choices. They showed real care for the planet as they researched and created fact files about endangered animals from the Amazon rainforest.
We were also lucky to be visited by Georgie from Eco Active, who taught us all about reducing, reusing and recycling. The children loved learning how to reuse everyday items and turn them into fun new toys and creations.
We are incredibly proud of how our Reception children have taken on the responsibility of looking after their environment. They have shown curiosity, kindness and determination throughout the year.
What a fantastic year it has been in Reception. We are so proud of how much the children have grown, and we wish them the very best of luck as they continue their learning journey into Year 1.
Have a wonderful summer break!
What a busy term we have had in nursery class. As part of our learning around our core book Baby Goes to Market, the children went on a very exciting trip to Ridley Road Market! They were thrilled to ride on the bus for 14 stops alongside their friends and teachers. At the market, the children explored the vibrant stalls, choosing fresh fruit and beautiful traditional African fabric to bring back and share at nursery.
We were also delighted to welcome Zayd’s mum, Habiba, who visited to read 'M is for Mango' with the children. A special bonus—she brought along baby Sophia too, who was a big hit with everyone!
Our children have been thoroughly enjoying the new water and sand area in the garden! They’ve been busy exploring, pouring, digging, and splashing—developing their motor skills and imagination through sensory play. We’ve also been learning how to play safely, taking turns, and using the tools and space with care. It’s been wonderful to see the children working together, sharing ideas, and having so much fun!
Nursery graduation was the final celebration to mark the end of a wonderful year of learning for many of our children who move on to reception class in September. The children received their certificates from Ciara with confidence and enthusiasm – parents and practitioners were all very proud and we will miss our children very much!
Have a wonderful Summer and we look forward to welcoming existing children and new children to nursery class in September.
🐛TODDLER ROOM 🦋
This half term has been very exciting in Toddler Room. We have been exploring transformation schema and have had the opportunity to observe caterpillars transform into butterflies. We watched them grow and spin cocoons around themselves and then emerge as butterflies.
We also observed some ducklings hatch from their eggs. We loved holding the ducklings and watching them go for their first swim. We had to remember to hold them very carefully so that we didn't squash them.
We have had some visitors in Toddler Room too. Onyinye Iwu came in to share her story 'The Best Jollof Rice Ever'. We really loved the story and we have been reading it lots in the room.
We also had another visit from Angela Brooksbank and read her new story 'M is for Mango'. We worked with Angela and the whole centre to create our own Mango tree.
Thye children have been talking about dinosaurs and volcanos. We decided to make some erupting volcano in the sand using bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and food colouring. It was amazing watching out volcanoes erupting.
What a wonderful year it’s been in the Baby Room! We’ve loved watching your little ones grow and explore through so many exciting experiences. From splashing joyfully in water play to the calm moments of Mindful Mo, each day has been full of discovery. Our forest school adventures brought nature to life, and the magical transformation of caterpillars into butterflies - and hatching real ducklings - sparked awe and curiosity. Most special of all has been seeing friendships blossom as the children learn, play, and laugh together. Thank you for being part of such a memorable year!
I cannot believe this is the last newsletter I’ll be writing for baby room! I have loved leading such a rewarding room and have grown professionally and personally over the last 7 years in here.
I am so pleased to have been able to make an impact on so many of the youngest children’s journeys. Hopefully I’ll be able to teach many of them again in years to come!
It feels extra special to have been nominated for the baby room of the year award and I feel incredibly proud of how far we’ve come as a team. There really isn’t a baby room you’d rather be in!
Love, Eva
