Edition 14. published 21 December 2025
Dear Ambler families,
As we come to the end of Autumn term, I would like to say what a fantastic term it has been! Lessons have been full of talk for learning, children making links to previous learning and great questions full of curiosity! So a huge thank you to all our wonderful staff for their hard work, creativity, and dedication to make sure that children have memorable learning opportunities and brilliant enrichment experiences.
A special highlight was the KS1 Nativity, Whoops-a-Daisy Angel. The children performed with such confidence, joy, and enthusiasm - it truly was a wonderful performance and a great way to begin the festive season. We are incredibly proud of each and every one of them.
Thank you to Ruth and our kitchen team and lunchtime staff for providing a delicious Christmas lunch. The children and staff thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful! Also a special thank you for the taster sessions that Caterlink hosted during parents evening - I hope you all enjoyed the food.
We also loved seeing so many of you at our festive sing-alongs. These were wonderful community events, bringing people together to celebrate the season and end the term.
A heartfelt thank you as well to Friends of Ambler for their fantastic fundraising efforts this term. The Silent Auction was an overwhelming success, and the Christmas Tree Market - complete with hot chocolate, face painting, and playground games -brought so much fun to our school community. Your dedication and generosity help provide wonderful opportunities and resources for ALL our children.
For the holiday break, I want to wish all our families a peaceful, joyful and well-deserved rest. Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday 6th January 2026.
Warmest wishes,
Sandy McNicholl

We are very happy to support in any way we can, so please do not feel that you need to wait until January to raise concerns.
FESTIVE FUN AT LIBRARIES
Free crafting for all ages - click here for a full list of activities happening at Islington libraries.
It’s been a busy and fun filled term for Friends of Ambler, both in fundraising and in building our school community.
Carols at Arsenal showcased Ambler's pride (and excellent baking!), the Christmas Tree Market brought families together for festive fun, full of games, crafts, Santa letters and sustainable jumper swaps. Our annual silent auction was a huge success, smashing its £10k target and bringing in support from parents, carers, local businesses and staff alike. Throw in Comedy Night, Movie Nights, Greetings Cards, Grow Ambler and hundreds of uniform items rehomed - it’s clear Ambler's community has been busy and is at the heart of everything we do. It definitely has been a season of connection and generosity!
All of this activity directly supports Ambler children, enriching their curriculum and experiences throughout their time at Ambler. FoA funds workshops, enrichment projects, trips, and hands-on learning spaces across the school, including this year's winter performances and the newly developed STEAM attic. We are discussing with the school what the next big project is going to be, which some of the funds raised last term can already be helping with!

🫘 YEAR 4/5 PANTO 🌱
To celebrate the festive season, Year 4 and 5 went on a visit to the King's Head Theatre in Islington to see a pantomime of Jack and the Beanstalk! The children were captivated by the colourful sets, lively music and hilarious characters, joining in with all the classic “Oh yes it is!” moments. It was wonderful to see their excitement grow as they experienced live theatre together. A big thank you to Friends of Ambler for funding this special experience.
🌟 KS1 NATIVITY 🌟
Well done to all of our year 1 and 2 children for their spectacular performances of Whoops-a-Daisy Angel. They did themselves proud.
Thank you to all the staff and parents/carers that made it possible, and huge thanks to Louis for filming and putting together a video of the show. This has been uploaded to Google Classroom for anyone who was unable to join in person.
🔥GREAT FIRE OF LONDON 🔥
This half term Year 2 have been learning about The Great Fire of London. They then took part in a workshop where they acted out how the fire started, understood who it spread and then had a go at putting it out. They also looked at artefacts, built houses, played games and used their retrieval skills to work out the answers to a quiz. Thanks to Friends of Ambler for funding this fantastic workshop!
As we are nearing the holiday period, during which children may be using devices more, it is important to remember to monitor your children's online activity daily.
This is particularly relevant at the moment because staff and children are reporting references to 18+ content being viewed by children on streaming services.
The internet can be a wonderful place of great benefit to our pupils and watching high-quality children's content on streaming services can be a nice bonding activity for families. Our highest priority, however, is ensuring that children remain safe whilst online and making sure they know what to do if they come across anything inappropriate or causes them distress.
The following page is a helpful parents' guide to supporting children with what to do when they come across inappropriate content which complements the rules children are taught in school, including our Digital Charter. You can also find further information via the UK Safer Internet Centre (click the icon below).
Below is a link to a Netflix checklist for parents which is similar to others for different platforms available on the UK Safer Internet Centre website.
In other tech news at Ambler this half-term, Years 4, 5 and 6 were lucky enough to have iMovie green screen workshops with the team from 3Discovery. They were taught about constructive use of technology by working in groups to use the iMovie app on iPads to film their own videos about online safety.
As part of our teaching on online safety, we discuss the risks of having a smartphone, or other devices (e.g. impact on sleep, mental and physical health, and inappropriate content).
At Ambler, we recommend that children are not given smartphones while at primary school, and invite parents/carers to sign the pledge on Arbor.
If you would like some inspiration for constructive activities children could do on a device if having well-earned a bit of screen time over the break, then try these new 'Hour of AI' coding activities from the 'Hour of Code' team here.
They all focus on AI literacy and helping children to understand it's safe use as a tool.

A big thankyou to The Toy Project who support the school and our families with toy donations around the festive season. We appreciate all your help and making sure every child gets a toy at Christmas! If you are in need of any Toys or would like to donate some old unwanted toys please reach out to The Toy Project
This half term we participated in the InterFaith Poetry Competition as part of Interfaith week which is a yearly celebration that aims to strengthen relations between different faith and non-religious communities.
The theme this year was “Community: Together we Serve” and children were encouraged to think about what community means to them; how people from different beliefs, religions and world views help in their own way; and what their family does to help others.
The entries were outstanding. The poems were beautifully written and captured the spirit of community. Congratulations to our runners up and winners.
Year 3 and 4
Winner: Eliyanah
Runners up: Daisy, Sally and Toren
Year 5 and 6
Winner: Maryam
Runner’s up: Jana and Midhuna
We had a surprise visit from The Women's Champions League Trophy this half-term. The trophy was won by the Arsenal Women's Team in the 2024/25 season. This was a great experience for both children and staff and was particularly inspiring for our girls who enjoy playing and watching football. Thanks @arsenal_foundation for taking the time to visit Ambler!
Our boys team were also treated to a special treat when they were visited by Bayern Munich youth scouts and special guest - ex-Bayern Munich player and Champions League winner Thomas Linke. The boys enjoyed a training session with the Bayern staff before being gifted a full Bayern Munich training kit.
Thank you @fcbayernpathway and @arsenal_foundation for such a special opportunity.
The children attending the Arsenal Double Club at school this year were invited to a special Christmas Celebration at The Arsenal Hub courtesy of The Arsenal Foundation. The children were treated to a fun football training session at the hub, before embarking on a tour of The Emirates Stadium. Later, they returned to the Hub to meet and read to members of the Arsenal Women's Team, which included Beth Mead, Katie McCabe and Stina Blackstenius. Thanks @arsenal_foundation for a fantastic day!
At parents evening, teachers and SLT were posed questions by parents who have concerns about their child's progress and/or wellbeing. We are aware that navigating support for children's learning and wellbeing needs can be difficult, to say the least. To support parents with what Ambler's SEND offer and protocols are, you can view our SEND Information Report and SEND Policy on our website. There you will also find a parent guide to literacy difficulties, including dyslexic tendencies. As referenced in last half term's Chronicle, a wide range services outside of Ambler are available to support parents and families of children who may have additional needs.
Islington's Local Offer is a good starting point for local, free services. All local authorities have a local offer published on their website, so families living outside of Islington also have services they can access locally. Parents with an interest in ADHD or autism assessments can, of course, approach the school for a referral to CAMHS; however, as explained in last month's newsletter, the NHS Right to Choose pathway is another route that can be explored via your GP. and is, potentially, faster. Finally, there are also non-profit organisations and charities like Growing Hope who offer free therapies for children with additional needs. You are able to self-refer, as well as approach the school for a referral. Please reach out to our Inclusion Leads Rachael O'Sullivan and Mrs Hradsky via the school or children's centre offices if you have any further questions specific to your child.
There is a range of support available for young people and families who may need it over the holidays.

We launched our first Spelling Bee of the year with a bang! The competition was fierce and the children's spelling abilities outstanding! Our Year 3/4 winner was Otis in 4B and our Year 5/6 winner was Brianna in 6G. Well done to everyone who competed and to our celebrated 'most improved spellers'
It's been a great half-term for times tables in KS2. The classes have been working hard to earn points for their class and get them up the leaderboard. Congratulations to 6B who will earn a non-uniform day!
We also had our termly times tables competition in the last week of term. A champion was selected from each class and battled it out to see who is the ultimate times tables master in KS2. Well done to all the champions Ilyas, Kheriya, Felix, Huda, Kai, Fatimah, Selina and to Phanuel, our overall winner!
This term, we launched our wonderful Reading Roadmap Challenge and have been blown away by how many books the children have read so far. We had our first Golden Ticket prize draw and the winners were Scarlett and Danii in Year 3, Malaya and Yemariam in Year 4, Valentina and Oskar in Year 5 and Fatimah and Lena in Year 6. We also celebrated all those children who have read masses of books this term and those who have worked really hard on their reading in general.
SPECIAL GUEST ASSEMBLY
A huge thank you to Guardian journalist, Jonathan Liew - who is part of our parent/carer community here at Ambler - for kindly agreeing to come in and inspire Key Stage 1 and 2 about writing. Jonathan's job as a sports journalist for a national newspaper was of huge interest to our children, and they were hanging on his every word (particularly when it was mentioned that he has probably attended over a thousand football matches... for free!)
In the assembly it was mentioned that boys under perform girls by a large margin when it comes to national data for end of KS2 writing outcomes. Hopefully, hearing about interesting jobs in writing, and how you get there, will have motivated our children to really think about writing for a purpose and options in later life. 6G were also lucky enough to have some extra time for a more focused Q&A with Jonathan, as they are currently writing newspaper reports in class.
Lastly, if you were wondering what Jonathan's 3 top tips for budding writers are then, don't worry, we've got you covered:
🖊️ Read as much as you can
🖊️Learn new words
🖊️Write about your passion
🌟Do you have a job, or even an interest, that you think our children may find inspirational? Please let the senior leadership team know. We may be able to arrange more special guest assemblies.
This half term, we have continued to support mental health and wellbeing across the School and the Children’s Centre. As part of this work, we recently reviewed our staff wellbeing survey. The feedback has been really helpful in highlighting where things are going well and where further improvements will make a positive difference. Using this, we have put together practical plans for the term ahead.
At the start of the year, staff took part in a wellbeing session during our INSET day, focusing on stress management and effective workload strategies. This session helped set a supportive tone for the term and provided practical tools for maintaining balance and resilience.
We are also fortunate to have ongoing support from our Educational Psychotherapist, Katy Singer, who continues to work with children, parents, and staff at Ambler. Through 1:1 sessions, group work, and reflective practice, Katy plays a key role in promoting emotional wellbeing across our community. She and Georgia are now nearing the end of their Autumn Term therapeutic story group and will be organising a special book-launch event in the new year to celebrate the children’s work.
Together, these efforts help us maintain a caring, nurturing, and emotionally healthy environment in which every child can thrive.
The Eco Team have gotten off to a great start and have been meeting regularly. They are full of enthusiasm and are keen to help support our school in making conscious and eco friendly choices throughout the day. During their meetings, the children work well together, sharing and planning ideas for the videos they make and share with the rest of the school. These videos often include something we can all improve on, such as putting rubbish in the bin, as well as helpful top tips and fun facts to support learning about sustainability.
A big thank you to everyone who took part in our Cut Your Carbon challenge. The Eco Team has been busy collecting the results, and these will be shared after the winter break.
As we move into the festive season, please remember to think reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible.
SCIENCE WORKSHOPS
This half term we had a visit from a member of The Royal Society of Science. He came and performed some science experiments to KS1, KS2 and our families linked to sustainability and fuelling our future. The kids particularly enjoyed the fire and rocket blast off!
Congratulations to year 5 for completing their two-week intensive swimming lessons at Highbury Pool. From practising different strokes, diving technique and even some life-saving, they learnt so much and made amazing progress! It was wonderful to see
It's been an exciting and hands-on half term for Year 1, especially with our fantastic Toy Workshop linked to last term's humanities topic, Toys. We were lucky to welcome a special visitor who brought a fascinating collection of toys from across the ages - some even dating back over one hundred years!
The children were amazed to explore toys made from wood, metal and glass, as well as puppets, masks and mechanical toys of all different kinds. They didn't stop there, as the children became real-life archaeologists for the day, digging through soil to uncover hidden toys.
To finish, everyone had the chance to design and create their own toy, showcasing their creativity and imagination, before proudly taking them home to show their families!
Thanks to Friends of Ambler for funding the workshop and to the parents who volunteered to help on the day 🙏
We were delighted to welcome back a group of former Ambler pupils, now in Year 7, who returned to perform as a band in a special assembly for both KS1 and KS2. Their performance showcased impressive musical talent and confidence, and it was wonderful for our current pupils to see what can be achieved with dedication and teamwork. The band proved to be a real inspiration, sparking excitement and motivation among the children of Ambler who watched.
MUSIC CENTRE CONCERT
A group of our Key Stage 2 children had the exciting opportunity to perform in a music concert at Highbury Grove Secondary School as part of Music Education Islington’s first music centre concert of the year. The pupils represented our school brilliantly, showcasing their hard work, confidence, and growing musical skills alongside children from across the borough. It was a wonderful celebration of young talent, and we are incredibly proud of everyone who took part.
The team cheered each other on through a variety of different athletics events that included: relay races, speed bounce, long jump, triple jump and javelin throw.
Ambler were able to win in their boy and girl relay races and encouraged each other throughout in every event.
A special shout out goes to Adriana, who demonstrated a positive attitude throughout and was a great team player.
Our Y5/6 Cricket Team showed a great effort in WINNING the Islington Indoor Cricket Festival! The team demonstrated great teamwork, individual skill and encouragement for each other. The level of batting, bowling and fielding ability was truly phenomenal, and we are hugely proud of your efforts and achievement!
A special shout out goes to Ki, for being an excellent leader within the team. He also supported his teammates to improve their technique and encouraged them fully throughout the day.
Our children competed in a series of activities, that showcased their excellent teamwork and communication skills. The team showed DREAMS attributes such as resilience and determination which resulted in them WINNING the tournament! A special mention for Josie for engaging in all the activities enthusiastically, even when she was faced with challenges that required her to step out her comfort zone. Well done to everyone involved, we are immensely proud of your achievements.
TAG RUGBY TOURNAMENT
Our tag-rugby team were in action this half-term too, competing in the annual PESSPA Islington Tournament. The team worked hard and used their DREAMS qualities to win a couple of games, but was unfortunately not enough to progress to the knock-out stages. Well done to everyone who took part, we are extremely proud of your efforts. A special shout out goes to Zehra, for showing great enthusiasm and determination to do her best.
NEWS FROM EARLY YEARS
It’s been another wonderfully busy half term in the EYFS! The children are really settled now and are truly getting stuck into their learning, routines, and friendships. It has been lovely to see so many new relationships forming across the classes as everyone grows in confidence.
I’ve been especially proud of our Reception children, so many of them are already reading with such confidence and enthusiasm. Their progress has been a joy to watch.
This half term has also been packed with fantastic enrichment opportunities. From our exciting zoo visit to the magical pantomime and theatre trip, the children have had plenty of chances to explore and discover.
A big well done to all the children for their fantastic Winter Sing-Along! Their happy voices, big smiles, and amazing festive spirit made it such a special moment for everyone.
As many of you already know, Ruby (Nursery) and Miss Long (Reception) are currently completing their teacher training. For the first half of the Spring term, they will be based in different schools for their second placement, so you won’t see them around for a little while. Please don’t worry, the rest of our lovely EYFS team will be here and are more than happy to help with anything you need.
To everyone heading into the holidays, have a lovely, relaxing break, and to those celebrating Christmas, I hope it’s filled with plenty of festive magic!
Best wishes

Our Reception children have completed their very first term, and we are so proud of how brilliantly they have settled - forming new friendships, looking out for one another, and working collaboratively every day. They have explored vibrant printing techniques inspired by Andy Warhol, investigated the concepts of night and day through stories and illustrations, and learned an impressive number of new phonics sounds. The children have especially enjoyed spotting tricky words and digraphs in books and around the environment.
In Drawing Club, the children have been using their imagination to invent wonderful adventures, and our Forest School sessions in Clissold Park have been a real highlight -creating fairy fires, mud painting, decorating logs, and discovering the natural world with curiosity and confidence. We were also delighted to welcome Dev Kothari, author of One Diwali Day, who shared her story and inspired the children with a wonderful interactive session.
Our library trips have continued to spark a love of reading, and we are very grateful to all the parents who volunteered for both Forest School and library visits. After reading The Little Red Hen, the children baked their own bread and even held a successful bread sale. Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Winter Stay and Play session - it was a fantastic turnout and so much fun! We then rounded off the term with our annual Winter Singalong in the forest, a truly magical way to celebrate the season together. Wishing all our families a lovely winter break, and we look forward to lots more fun and learning in 2026!
What a busy and exciting term it has been in Nursery! The children have fully immersed themselves in play, particularly in the block area, where they have been creating homes and “special places” to enrich their imaginative games. They have continued to express themselves confidently through mark making and creative activities in the art area, developing greater control when using runny glue and spatulas.
The children have shown perseverance and determination as they learn to hold and use scissors safely and correctly, discovering that when cutting around a shape, it is the paper that moves, not the scissors! They are also developing their understanding of pattern and number by exploring arrangements of objects and learning to recognise how many items are in the arrangement just by looking.
During our TastEd sessions, the children have used their senses to explore a variety of foods. This month they enjoyed cutting, touching, smelling, and talking about different types of cabbage.
One of the highlights of the term was our exciting class trip to London Zoo. The children loved seeing lions, tigers, giraffes, camels, gorillas, and many more animals. The visit linked to our core book The Runaway Chapatti, and the children enthusiastically discussed the animals they spotted and the patterns on their coats.
Now it is time for our children to enjoy a well-earned rest and a relaxing holiday. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in January 2026.
Toddlers took part in a creative winter activity, making their own clay snowman magnets as part of our story 'The Snowman'. They explored the texture of the soft clay, rolling, pressing, and shaping it into snowmen. Once the snowmen were formed, the children decorated them with paint, choosing colours and adding personal touches. The activity provided a wonderful sensory experience and encouraged creativity, concentration, and fine motor development.
Toddlers went on a wonderful trip to ChickenShed to watch the festive performance “Christmas Tales.” From the moment they arrived, the children were captivated by the bright lights, colourful costumes, and welcoming atmosphere of the theatre. As the show began, the toddlers were drawn into the story through lively songs, gentle movement, and interactive moments that encouraged them to join in. Many of the children clapped along to the music, pointed excitedly at the characters on stage, and smiled as the performers engaged with the audience.
Toddlers went on a walk around the local environment as part of our story 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?' During the outing, they used an instant camera to take photos of the things that caught their interest. Some of the pictures came out a bit blurry, but the children were excited to see their images appear instantly.
This month, the baby room has been buzzing with festive excitement and creative learning! Our book “Dear Santa” inspired lots of hands-on exploration. The children investigated Santa sacks filled with different textures and toy presents, sparking feelings of excitement, surprise, and happiness. They also practiced caring and sharing by roleplaying gift-giving with their friends, embracing the true spirit of the season.
In Forest School, the children had a go at making beeswax candles, squishing and rolling the wax with adult support to create their own candles. They also explored a winter ice scape, experimenting with ice, foam, glitter, and colour, noticing cold, wet textures as the ice melted, and using shiny containers to scoop, paintbrushes to paint, and bubble snakes to create foam.
The festive fun continued with salt dough Christmas decorations, rolling and cutting shapes, and taste education during snack time as the children made their own fresh orange juice using a lemon squeezer - delicious!
We also transformed our sleep room into an immersive bubble wrap runway, with walls and ceilings projected with snowflakes, stars, northern lights, and Christmas images. With the bubble machine blowing, the children played with shiny, foil “snowballs,” and Santa’s grotto hideouts. Running across the bubble wrap, made sounds like snow crunching beneath their feet. After all the fun, the children enjoyed lying on mats, gazing at the stars and northern lights projections.
The term ends with the children going on a magical trip to The ChickenShed Theatre to watch “Christmas Tales”, a festive adventure around the world, into outer space and back again to make sure the Christmas tree is ready in time for the big day!
