Samwise is a 3 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback cross (with what, we don't know, but it's BIG) who spent the majority of his first 3 years in a wire kennel. He was apprehended by a member of the public when his guardians were going to leave him alone in the kennel in the garage of the rental property they were abandoning. He came into care at only 74 lbs, with pressure sores, chewed up ears, an old, healed break in his tail, very long nails, and as much anxiety as affection all balled up in that body of his.Â
Samwise is a "love nipper", so when he gets excited or affectionate he will mouth your ear or hand, but not aggressively. He is, quite frankly, a bit of a nightmare when on leash, but that's likely his enthusiasm for being free of the confines of the kennel. We have not worked on kennel training him further at the writing of this article about him, as he has spent quite enough time in a crate. Perhaps once he is feeling more secure and less afraid of abandonment we will be able to do so. For now, he just needs to learn that he is loved.
Samwise is also a counter surfer and food thief. While he isn't food aggressive, he will absolutely go for any available food and needs a firm hand when it comes to manners around people food. We are working on it though, of course!
