We will be using ClassDojo for our daily parent/teacher communication. I will post weekly newsletters, important information, reminders, and announcements here. You will be able to direct message me through the app or you can email me at jhayes@alvinisd.net. I will always do my best to respond in a timely manner!
Subscribe to the Pomona E-News for weekly newsletters from Mrs. Kwan and Mrs. Cross on all things happening on our campus!
In my classroom I believe in building relationships in order to have a collaborative understanding for classroom behavior. Students will learn procedures to safely and respectfully learn as a team while in our classroom. As a Capturing Kids Showcase school, we will build a class social contract that serves a promise of how we will treat one another. The students produce the words for the Social Contract by answering the following questions:
How do you want to treat each other?
How do I (the teacher) want to be treated by you (the students)?
How do you (the students) want to be treated by me (the teacher)?
How will we treat each other when there is conflict?
When student are not following the Social Contract, there are a series of four questions I ask:
What are you doing?
What are you supposed to be doing?
Are you doing it?
What are you going to do about it?
If students do not follow classroom procedures and/or the social contract, consequences may include:
Loss of Dojo Points
Logical Consequences (apology letters, loss of privileges, working alone, etc.)
Conduct Mark
Parent Contact
Office Referral
I believe that homework should be beneficial & not stress you (or your child) out! Students will receive problem solving homework on Monday and it is due on Friday when class begins. Homework will spiral over the skills we are working on in class, as well as skills they should know from previous years. Each student is also required to complete and pass 1 lesson on Imagine Math each week. You can find your student's passed lessons on their dashboard when they login. They will get time in class to work on Imagine Math, so many students should/can complete their passed lesson during the school day.
*Students will be recognized throughout the year for the amount of Imagine Math lessons passed. The goal is 50 lessons passed by May 1st!
Your student will be responsible for their Daily Folder that will be brought to school daily. This folder will contain their conduct sheet, as well as additional resources we may deem necessary for use when students are at home working on assignments. On Tuesdays, their folders will contain any graded work, as well as campus/district flyers, and/or other paper communication. Please review their folder daily and return each day. Additional communication will be digital, so please check ClassDojo daily, as well.
Your child will be be given a letter grade for each core subject: Math, Science, Language Arts, Reading, and Social Studies. These grades consist of Daily Work (30%) and Major Grades (70%) (Assessments, Projects, etc.). You can access your child's grades via Skyward. I do my best to update grades weekly. Please check your child's grades regularly to ensure all work is turned in. If you do not have your login, please contact the front office for assistance.
