FAQs for 5th graders

General Questions

  • If my student fails the STAAR test, will my child still be able to select an elective?

Yes, your child will still have an elective but could receive intervention support through their other courses.


  • Do we have to dress out for PE?

No. You will not be dressing out for PE in 6th grade.


  • We know we are moving, so do we have to fill it the course card?

Yes. If your child is staying in Alvin ISD, the course information will transfer with them.


  • My child has a 504 plan or an IEP, do I need to provide a copy of their plan to the junior high?

No, all 504 plans and IEPs will transfer if they are transferring within the district.


  • If my child is in the dyslexia program, will they still continue in a dyslexia program in junior high?

It depends on if they have completed the dyslexia program in elementary. The junior high counselors will receive that information from the elementary that your child attends.


  • My child and I want to change a course selection, but it is the summer and the counselor is not on campus.

No schedule changes will be completed after June 1st.


MAP/APA/STEM Information

  • Do I still have to fill out the course card if my child qualifies for MAP or other programs?

Yes. The appropriate programs will be scheduled for your child upon approval and requirements are met for those specialized

programs.


  • If my child is not successful in APA, will my child have the opportunity to switch to regular?

Students are required to sign an APA contract. Also, they will have to attend a number of tutorials before

moving out of the class and show that there is an academic need.


Accelerated Math/Bridge Program

  • My child is not currently in the APA 5th Grade Math Class, can they still enroll in Accelerated Math?

There is a selection process to qualify for the Bridge program and Accelerated Math course for 6th grade. You will be informed if your child qualifies for these programs after the process is complete.

  • We have a vacation planned during the Bridge program dates, so will my child be able to still be in Accelerated Math?

No. The students have to participate and attend the Bridge program to be considered.


  • If my child is not successful in the Bridge Program, will they still be able to enroll in the Accelerated Math?

No. If your child is not successful in the Bridge Program, this is an indicator that the Accelerated Math class

would be too difficult for them.


Dual Language

  • My child is in the Dual Language Program, will they still be allowed to choose Spanish in junior high?

Yes, your child will be scheduled for the Spanish class based on enrollment given by the junior high counselors.


  • Will my child continue in the Bilingual program in junior high?

In most cases, your child will receive ESL (English as a Second Language) services in their junior high courses.

However, there are special circumstances that might require other programs. Check with your counselor for more information.


  • Will they be offered transportation if my child is in a program on another campus for ESL services?

Harby JH, Jackie Caffey JH, and Rodeo Palms JH have the ESL program and transportation can be provided to those campuses if needed.


Electives

  • I missed the band tryouts for my zoned junior high, what can I do to have my child still enrolled in band?

Reach out to the band teacher at your zoned junior high to help you with instrument selection, tryouts, etc.


  • My child wants to participate in Athletics, will that be an option for them in 6th grade?

Students are able to participate in Athletics starting in 7th grade.


Junior High Zoning

  • Skyward bases the zoning based on your address, so your child will have to go to the zoned school based on your address. If you have specific questions about the student transfer regulations or rezone transfer guidelines, click here.
