Parent Resources

Although I am a teacher, I am also a parent. And I know how difficult it can be to want to help your student but feel like you don't know how! Here are my recommendations as a mom and a teacher!

  1. Make sure they have their notebook and something to write with every day for class. (you might THINK they do but maybe they don't)

  2. Check Skyward (online grades). My participation grades tell you how they are doing/behaving over all in class (apart from Spanish).

  3. Email me if you have questions or want to check if what they are telling you is correct. I know many teens don't communicate much (if at all) so I'm happy to give you more details about grades, behavior in class, etc.

  4. Grade book questions?? A "1" in Skyward means your student was absent and needs to turn in missing work. A "0" in Skyward means they were in class but never turned in the work. A "*" means I have not put the grades in yet for that assignment. If they finished online work after the due date, s/he MUST email me to tell me or I will not know to go check their work.

My child didn't really learn much in Spanish 1 but s/he is now in Spanish 2...now what?

Unfortunately this does happen sometimes due to different reasons. This actually happened to me as a student in high school and college. It may not be your child's fault but it is now a situation s/he has to deal with. In order to be successful s/he needs to commit to working hard to fill any gaps s/he has from Spanish 1. This includes extra studying of vocabulary at home and attending tutoring to understand grammar concepts.

If your student is in this situation and chose to take Spanish 2 APA, s/he will have to work even harder to quickly fill gaps from Spanish 1. According to the Advanced Academic contract you and s/he signed, a student cannot drop from an APA/AP to a regular class prior to the end of the first 9 weeks.

Use this page of Spanish 1 Resources to help fill the gaps.

Please always reach out to me if you have specific concerns or questions regarding your student and/or my class. jaguilera@alvinisd.net
