ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS INFORMATION AND RESOURCES

English Language Arts Syllabus

This is an exciting year for our students as they transition from students "learning to read" to students who are "reading to learn." We will be navigating our way through the district-adopted Amplify CKLA program. 

Course Overview: All students in ELA 5 and ELA 5+ will be completing the same core Amplify curriculum and Amplify vocabulary.

Textbook: The initial reading for each unit in the Amplify CKLA program will be done in class. Each unit of study will consist of reading comprehension, reading fluency, vocabulary, spelling, and morphology. Students have a consumable workbook and small 'readers' for each unit. The units will conclude with a final piece of writing.

Additional Online Supplemental Materials: ReadWorks is an online program that allows the teacher to assign leveled text based on the student’s reading levels. ReadWorks is recommended by Amplify at various times during each unit topic, theme, or literary element. Assignments through Readworks help students make connections, compare and contrast and build vocabulary across contexts. Additionally, students will have monthly Word Study and D.L.R. (Daily Language Review) booklets. These assignments are patterned each week and students take weekly quizzes. Novels: Students will be reading novels in class in addition to Amplify Reading. Students demonstrate their reading proficiency through the use of comprehension questions, quizzes and group discussions. Audiobooks will be provided for students to use while reading and are linked in Google Classroom. 

Assessments: Amplify CKLA Program - Assessments are given after each reading unit. Study materials are provided prior to the unit assessments. Three times a year students take NWEA MAP assessments which monitor reading growth. MAP = Measurement of Academic Progress. 

Google Classroom - Students must use Google Classroom (GC) daily to keep up with all assignments. Class notes, videos, resources, and audio for our class novels are posted on GC. This is a must especially if the student has been absent. If absent, all assigned reading will need to be made up prior to the student returning to class whenever possible in order to be able to participate in discussions. 

TEAM Binder - Students will have a tabbed section for ELA in their team binder. Within this section will be Pdf of novels, monthly Word Study and D.L.R. (Daily Language Review) booklets, and grammar activities.
