ARI Beyond Grade 3 is a key component of Alabama’s comprehensive literacy initiative, designed to enhance literacy achievement beyond third grade by extending established structures and supports that promote data-informed decision-making aimed at increasing proficiency outcomes. Grounded in the Alabama Multi-Tiered System of Support (AL MTSS) framework, this initiative focuses on differentiating tiered literacy instruction to meet the needs of all students—particularly struggling readers, as outlined in the Alabama Literacy Act.
This work supports the full implementation of the 2021 Alabama Course of Study: English Language Arts and includes high-quality, job-embedded professional learning aligned with the science of reading. As part of this effort, the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) will develop a peer coaching model through cohorts representing various regions of the state. The purpose of this model is to strengthen instructional practice through collaborative, student-centered coaching that promotes the sustained use of evidence-based strategies and supports ongoing educator growth to improve literacy outcomes for all learners.
COMING SOON: Focus on Four
The high-quality professional learning sessions currently in development will provide a strong foundation for ALSDE Peer Coaches, anchoring their efforts in evidence-based strategies. These sessions are also designed to support districts and schools seeking targeted guidance and high-quality professional learning opportunities for grades 4–8.

The Vertical Alignment of Standards for Grades K-5 is a comprehensive document designed to provide educators with a clear overview of the standards across these grade levels. This alignment serves as a valuable tool for curriculum planning, instruction, and assessment, ensuring that students progressively build their knowledge and skills as they advance through the elementary grades.
The standards highlighted in this document are of particular importance for the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP) and the Literacy Act Portfolio. Additionally, standards with aligned Proficiency Scales have also been highlighted. These standards represent the crucial foundation upon which student learning and achievement are built. However, it is essential to note that while this document emphasizes these key standards, all standards outlined in the 2021 Alabama Course of Study: English Language Arts should be taught throughout the school year to provide students with a well-rounded and comprehensive education.

The Alabama Reading Initiative’s (ARI) mission, since its inception in 1997, has been to improve K-3 literacy statewide, understanding that all components of the science of reading work together to ensure all students are skillful readers, writers, speakers, and listeners. Through the implementation of the Alabama Literacy Act, the ARI’s consistent determination and continued increased funding are set to move Alabama forward with the science of reading and structured, student-centered coaching as the foundation of our work.
