What is literacy? Many sources define literacy as “the ability to read and write.” However, literacy is broader. Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak, and listen; to use technology; to apply critical thinking skills to solve problems. Literacy is a life-long learning process. We are all continuing to learn every day. In order to demonstrate unity for Literacy, the Alabama Reading Initiative, Instructional Services, and Office of School Improvement’s literacy specialists have committed to work together to empower our students with the skills needed to be successful citizens.
Content Literacy in Alabama
The Alabama Course of Study: English Language Arts emphasizes the critical role of reading and writing in supporting knowledge acquisition and development across all subject areas. By promoting content literacy, the standards help students become well-rounded readers who can engage with a wide range of texts and text complexities. This broad approach to literacy enhances learning outcomes in every discipline and encourages greater collaboration and integration among educators across content areas.
