Welcome to 7th Grade Language Arts/Social Studies at Vineyard Junior High. I am delighted to have you in my class this year and look forward to many rewarding experiences as the year unfolds. I hope to create a classroom that is engaging and fun for students, while at the same time is a supportive and a safe place for learning.

I have been teaching for 27 years, most of which have been ELA and SS in the middle school setting. I am also thrilled to be teaching one of my passions this year, Theatre. I love to be involved in Theatre, on stage, backstage, directing, or in the audience. I also love to travel and have been to most 50 states, Europe, and Asia. My husband works for Cal Poly Pomona and both of our kids are at Los Osos this year.

COMMUNICATION

Students are provided with a daily agenda in both ELA and SS at the top of the Google Classroom. There, you can view all the materials we covered in class, including homework assignments and any other due work. This is the best resource for staying up to date with assignments. On Fridays, I will email all parents to let you know basic things covered for the week and what is coming up the following week. If you have a question, please respond to me at that email address. Additionally, please stay on top of grades on Infinite Campus. I tend to do the majority of grading on Fridays, or I finish over the weekend. Please email me with any questions or concerns you may have, and I will respond within 24 hours.

GRADES

Grades are based on class assignments and participation, projects, quizzes, and tests, and are weighted: Participation: 5%, Assignments/Quizzes: 25%, Projects: 35%, Tests/Essays: 35%

The grading scale is as follows: A= 100%-90% B= 89-80% C= 70-79% D= 60-69% F= 59% and below. Participation includes completing I-ready minutes and passing lessons, bringing a charged Chromebook, reading a silent reading book, and participating in group discussions. Assignments can be daily or week-long. Time will be given in class for projects, but they may need to be completed at home. Quizzes will be open-note, but tests will be closed-note.

HOMEWORK

For homework, I would like to ask students to read for 30 minutes each day. Additionally, students may need extra time at home to complete assignments started in class. On Wednesdays, I will post what is due for Friday. If a student needs to take their notebooks home to catch up, that is okay, but please be sure to bring the notebooks back to school. Homework is never meant to be an issue of frustration for home and families. Please let me know if a student is struggling to complete their homework.

CHROMEBOOKS

The school provides Chromebooks for student use. Students are expected to bring both their Chromebook and charger to class every day, with devices fully charged each night. Coming to class with an uncharged Chromebook will result in a loss of participation points and may negatively impact the student’s grade. Not having a Chromebook can interfere with completing specific assignments. Additionally, if a student is found using their Chromebook for non-school-related activities, their access to the device may be restricted or revoked.

LATE AND MISSING WORK POLICY:

Assignments may be checked daily, but are entered as a grade on Fridays. This is true for work assigned on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Late work will be accepted if it is completed before the following Friday for 70% credit. After the following Friday, it will not be graded. If a student misses one assignment throughout the semester, it should not significantly impact their overall grade. If a student is absent, he/she has as many days of absence to make up the assignment. Therefore, if a student is absent on a Monday, the assignments from that day will still be due by Friday. However, if a student is absent on a Thursday, the student has until Monday. All assignments that will be graded will be listed on my website, and students can use this list to be sure they are ready for Friday's grading. The only exception is semester presentations, which begin on the second-to-last Wednesday of the trimester.

CHEATING POLICY

Cheating is defined as not doing one’s work. Copying all or part of another student’s work or allowing another student to copy one’s work are examples of cheating. Copying text from a webpage and submitting it as your work, even with mild alterations, is also considered a form of cheating called plagiarism. Using AI or ChatGPT to complete one's work is a form of plagiarism. Any student caught cheating will have their work submitted to the administration, and credit will NOT be given for that assignment. The student will be referred to the office, and the parent will be called or emailed.
