Manifest Destiny Monument Assignment

STEP 1: Choose an event from Manifest Destiny that you will make the focus of your monument. Here are some possible events:

• The Trail of Tears

• The Oregon Country / Oregon Trail Pioneers

• Americans moving to Texas

• The War with Mexico

• The settling of Utah

• California and the Gold Rush

• The idea of Manifest Destiny itself

STEP 2: Decide the point-of-view that you want to represent. Do you want to celebrate the event? Do you want to show the side of other people that were affected by the event? 

STEP 3: Take some time to look over these real monuments from around the world. What do they teach visitors about the event they represent? What symbols are used to create emotions in those who view them?

STEP 4: Choose a fact or two that you want to teach about your event. Your monument will need to teach this fact in some way. Look over this website or in your packet to get information about your event. Do more research as needed.

STEP 5: Decide the emotion(s) or feeling(s) that you want your monument to create in those who visit your monument. What symbolism can you put into your monument to do this?

STEP 6: Create your rough draft in your packet and create your final draft on the page given to you.

STEP 7: Now, move on to the final draft - it is on a separate piece of paper.
