The Rosetta Stone is a stone with the same piece of writing carved in three different alphabets: Hieroglyphs (top), Demotic (middle) and Greek (bottom). It was found in 1799 by one of Napoleon's solders. In 1822 a French Egyptologist called Jean Francois Champollion decoded the hieroglyphs by comparing it to the Greek which was already known.
Students first patted out a rectangular clay tablet. Then they chose 3 different ancient alphabets to use to write out their names on their tablets similar to the Rosetta Stone.
