Welcome to Computers!

Computer class is more than just keyboarding, gaming or programming. We will learn to be problem solvers, creators and technology wizards! We will follow the Alpine School District Technology Curriculum.

Grades and Homework

Students receive a grade of Pass or Needs Improvement on their quarterly report cards. Students are expected to attend class and participate in activities, discussions, and assignments. 

I do not usually assign homework, but students are always welcomed and encouraged to practice keyboarding. Please encourage them to use correct technique. There is a specific keyboarding page on this site.

What do we learn?

The Alpine School District Technology Curriculum is divided into four curriculum strands. Students should be able to show basic competency in each of these areas by the end of their grade school years. See graphic below for more information.

Online Safety and Citizenship

I also encourage families to regularly discuss digital safety and online citizenship. We discuss these topics in class, but ongoing conversations at home solidify your values and expectations for positive online behavior. Digital Citizenship Page 

Basic District Internet Guidelines

1. School computer services are not intended for personal or private use. 

2. Internet filters are in place to guard against inappropriate material. However, 100% safety cannot be guaranteed because of the nature of the Internet itself. Please report inappropriate access to a trusted adult.

3. Students are to immediately report accidental access of inappropriate material and should never purposely attempt to access websites with inappropriate content. Students are taught how to handle any situation in which inappropriate material may accidentally be accessed. 

4. No student may access the Internet without parent permission. Parents grant permission in the annual student information update on Skyward.

5. All computer equipment is to be used only under direct teacher supervision. 

6. Students are expected to respect and follow the teacher’s instructions. 

7. Students are expected to follow basic net-etiquette at all times, which will be taught in class.

Student Email

All students with internet access in grades 3-12 have access to an Alpine School District gmail account. Students can only send or receive emails from other ASD gmail addresses for students at their school. We talk about proper email use in class, and I encourage you to monitor their use at home as well. You can find more information here. Used properly, a school email can be a positive scaffolding tool to prepare students for eventual responsible use of social media or other online communities.
