For the activities that are happening this year, we are asking for a donation of $20. This will help us with bus funding and materials. There are 2 ways to donate. You can go to myschoolfees.com and donate to the 4th grade field trip fund or you can send money or checks made out to Trailside Elementary to the front office or your child's teacher. If you need help with Myschoolfees.com please see the help video to the left.
On October 7th, we will be taking a walking field trip to Utah Lake. We will be gone from 9 am to 12 pm. We will be walking to Utah Lake via Vineyard Loop Road to the walking path by Utah Lake. There we will be observing the Utah Lake wetlands as well as the birds that call those wetlands home. This covers 2 standards for 4th grade.
Standard 4.1.1 for Science
Construct an explanation from evidence that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction. Emphasize how structures support an organism's survival in its environment and how internal and external structures of plants and animals vary within the same and across multiple Utah environments. Examples of structures could include thorns on a stem to prevent predation or gills on a fish to allow it to breathe underwater. (LS1.A)
Standard 1 for Social Studies
Students will understand the relationship between the physical geography in Utah and human life.
We will be having 4 rotations with activities that cover these 2 standards. Please note that no water access will be permitted. Afterward, we will be picnicking at Sunset Beach Park before returning to Trailside via Vineyard Road. Chaperones and volunteers to run the stations needed.
We have the awesome opportunity to go to the Clark Planetarium in Salt Lake City. This field trip is designed to give students an immersive experience with our solar system. This field trip will consist of 2 parts. The first is an interactive star show in the Dome Theater. The second part is a viewing of Dinosaurs of Antartica. This field trip is designed to teach 2 of our science standards.
Strand 4.4: OBSERVABLE PATTERNS IN THE SKY
The Sun is a star that appears larger and brighter than other stars because it is closer to Earth. The rotation of Earth on its axis and orbit of Earth around the Sun cause observable patterns. These include day and night; daily changes in the length and direction of shadows; and different positions of the Sun and stars at different times of the day, month, and year.
Standard 4.4.1
Construct an explanation that differences in the apparent brightness of the Sun compared to other stars is due to the relative distance (scale) of stars from Earth. Emphasize relative distance from Earth. (ESS1.A)
Standard 4.4.2
Analyze and interpret data of observable patterns to show that Earth rotates on its axis and revolves around the Sun. Emphasize patterns that provide evidence of Earth's rotation and orbits around the Sun. Examples of patterns could include day and night, daily changes in length and direction of shadows, and seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky. Earth's seasons and its connection to the tilt of Earth's axis will be taught in Grades 6 through 8. (ESS1.B)
AND
Standard 4.1.3
Analyze and interpret data from fossils to provide evidence of the stability and change in organisms and environments from long ago. Emphasize using the structures of fossils to make inferences about ancient organisms. Examples of fossils and environments could include comparing a trilobite with a horseshoe crab in an ocean environment or using a fossil footprint to determine the size of a dinosaur. (LS4.A)
This field trip will be on November 11 from 9-1:45. Chaperones are required, if you are interested in joining us please talk to your child's teacher.
Government plays a huge impact on our lives. On April 7, we will embark on a trip to the state capitol building to discover the impacts of government. The standard we will be exploring is the the following social studies standard.
Standard 3
Students will understand the roles of civic life, politics, and government in the lives of Utah citizens.
This is a fun day that gives students a glimpse into what it was like to live in the 1800s. They will learn to make icecream by hand, participate in various pioneer activities, and make a pioneer craft. This event will take place in May TBD.
Social Studies Standard:
Standard 2
Students will understand how Utah's history has been shaped by many diverse people, events, and ideas.
This year, our 4th graders will get the opportunity to learn many songs about Utah History, comprising of all the standards for Social Studies. We have 2 opportunities to perform this year. The first is November 2nd at 6pm for the Native American Cultural Celebration that Trailside puts on every year. We will be performing our Native American song. All the songs will be sang in a program in May TBD. Songs lyrics and music can be found by clicking the Utah State flag.
