Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What supplies does my student need to bring?

A: Just a backpack! The supplies we use are all provided through the school. Please keep all personal supplies- like markers, pens, and notebooks- at home.

Q: Do you have an Amazon list we can donate to?

A: Thanks to the request of generous parents, I have made an Amazon list. It can be accessed here.

Q: Can I be in the classroom?

A: Yes and no. If you have scheduled a time with me to volunteer, then absolutely! We love our parent helpers. However, if you are dropping off your student we ask that you do not come into the classroom. This is more hurtful than helpful as it can be distracting and send the student conflicting signals.

Q: What homework do you assign?

A: Child development- physical, emotional, social, and cognitive- is hugely impacted by play, and despite my best efforts, there is not enough of it in my classroom. To support guardians in facilitating the practice of play, I do not assign formal homework.

That being said, research shows that one of the most effective ways to academically support your student is reading with them each day.

Q: Should I send snacks or toys with my student?

A: No :) Class is just over 2 hours and we do not have scheduled snack time. I have granola bars and fruit snacks in case of need, but please do not send anything with your student.

There is also plenty to do at recess without bringing their own toys.

Q: What is Trading Post?

A: Trading Post is a monthly bookstore put on by the PTA. Parents report how many minutes their students read over the month (for my class those minutes are reported here) and those minutes convert to Trading Post Bucks that can be spent on books or other prizes.

Q: When and where is pick up/drop off?

A: AM Drop off: Kinder playground starting at 9:05 Pick up: Front office doors at 12:00

PM Drop off: Kinder playground starting at 12:35 Pick up: Kinder playground at 3:30

Students can be dropped off at the kindergarten gate (to the kindergarten playground) no more than 10 minutes before the bell. We ask that parents stay outside of the kindergarten playground to prevent crowding and protect the safety of the students. The bell rings at 9:15 or 12:45 indicating it is time to line up. When school starts, the kindergarten gate and outside classroom doors will be locked. Please check your child in at the office if they come late.

When class is dismissed we will be waiting for the kids to find their rides either by the front doors or the playground. They are only allowed to go with a parent or sibling, unless the parent has given me special permission to ride with another student.

Q: What if my child rides the bus?

A: If your child rides the bus, an aide will pick the kids up from the bus when they arrive at the school, and will help them load on the bus at the end of the day. The district has these bus tags you can print so we know which bus they ride.

Q: Do you celebrate birthdays or do spotlights?

A: We love to celebrate individuals! Be it on their birthday, half-birthday (summer birthdays), or spotlight week, it matters to me that each student has a time to shine (beyond their every day brightness).

For birthdays or half birthdays they will receive a birthday crown and the class will sing a birthday song. They are welcome, but not obligated, to bring something to share with the class. *Edible items must be store bought and individually wrapped.* These may be sent with the student or you may contact me to schedule a time to bring it in.

Spotlights will be done one student per week (with activities happening about 3 days of the week) and involve a few different ways to get to know our classmates. You will receive all you need the week before it will be your student's turn. If your student will be absent the entire week of their spotlight, please contact me so we can reschedule.

Q: What on Earth is Heggerty?

A: Your student may talk about Heggerty at home. This is our daily Phonological Awareness practice that involves rhyming, phoneme segmentation, phoneme manipulation, and other exercises.
