Information for Our School Year

Meet Miss Brown

I am from Utah and have attended schools throughout the state, which makes me excited to be teaching in Utah.  I would like to make a difference for our class the way that my teachers have done for me. I have taught 9 years of 2nd grade, 3 years of 4th grade, and this is my 6th year in first grade!

I enjoy reading, playing board games, baking, doing crafts, scrapbooking, and traveling.  I love spending time with my dog Pooka and my family, especially my 6 nephews and my 2 nieces.

Contacting Miss Brown

I LOVE to keep parents in the loop.  I send weekly newsletters & emails.

If there is anything else: concerns, questions, to talk about how amazing your child is...please contact me!

Email is the best way to contact me.  My email is rbrown@alpinedistrict.org

Feel free to also call me at Barratt 801-610-8701 ext. 112103. Please know that I often check my emails before I get to school and then again after school.  If you need something during the school day, please call and let the office know and they will get to me when they can.  Thanks!

Sneak a Snack

This year first grade has been assigned the first lunch time. To get the students used to being in school all day, we will have a snack for the first month or so of school.

During Open House and the first through emails, there will be a sign up sheet for people to sign up to send a treat for the class.  Due to allergies, this treat will need to be nut free.  Some good ideas for you would be crackers, pretzels, popcorn, fruits/vegetables, raisins/craisins, applesauce, etc.

After the first month of school, we will not do snacks  anymore as a class, but you can always send  one for your student to eat if they have a hard time making it to lunch.

See the link to sign up to send a treat for the class.  Sneak a Snack

Classroom Management

In my classroom, we have individual, group, and whole class management system.  We also discuss virtues such as respect, self-control, and kindness.

• Individual: A clip chart. Every student starts in the middle, and based on their choices during the day, they move their clip up or down. There are rewards for moving up and consequences for moving down.

• Table: Each table is named after a vowel. They earn points, and the table with the most points at the end of the day earns stamps to be turned in for rewards each month.

• Whole Class: We have a BINGO board. When the whole class does something well, they get a new

BINGO spot. When they get a row, we have a class reward!

Birthdays

I love celebrating with the children on their birthday or as close to the actual date as possible. If your student has a summer birthday, I will try to have us celebrate as close to their half birthday as possible.  I will send a star of the week packet home usually the week before your child’s birthday.  If you will fill out the 2 pages of information and send it back on or before the week they are assigned to be the star, I will share the information with the class. We would also love to have someone come and be our Royal Reader that week.

Treats:

Fill free to send a treat to have your student share with the class, but according to district policy it must be a store bought treat.  Also if you will avoid a treat with nuts, because we have some nut allergies, that would be greatly appreciated!

Homework and Reading at Home

I will send home homework packets each Monday. They will be due back by the next Monday, but feel free to send pages done early back early.

There will be some mandatory assignments, but there will also be choices for students to choose to do as part of their homework.

If you feel your student needs more of a challenge have them do more than the required amount.  Otherwise see the bulletin to know the required amount of choices for the week.

Also please read the announcements listed on the bulletin.

Reading at Home:

Read 20 Minutes a Day

It is so important for first graders to have at least 20 minutes of reading practice at home each day. That 20 minutes doesn’t just mean sitting down with a book. There are lots of different options for how to fit in those 20 minutes.

  Here are some ideas:

Reading books, like take home library books

Practicing Sight Words/ Spelling Words

Literacy computer programs or Apps including Lexia Core 5

Religious Texts

Reading their own writing
