HOPE Squad is a Suicide Prevention Program. It is clear that students are far more comfortable talking to each other than to adults. Research indicates suicide prevention programs that are ongoing are far more effective than prevention programs that occur for a short period of time. HOPE Squad takes both of these factors, that we know to be true, and creates a prevention program that meets students where they are at with hope for better and brighter days.
Are HOPE Squad Members trained to be Counselors?
No. Participation in HOPE Squad fortifies members' natural leadership skills. Members will be trained as "gatekeepers." Being a gatekeeper means that you know how to talk to people who are struggling and what questions to ask, those individuals that are struggling, to better know if they are experiencing suicidal thoughts. It means you are able to direct them to the help that they need and that you have a comfortable understanding of what your responsibility is to others - to offer help, to be a resource for finding help, but not being responsible for saving anyone. HOPE Squad members are expected to persuade individuals who are in need of help to talk with a trusted adult; that is their purpose.
