Please remind your children who ride a scooter or bike to school that when they reach school property, they need to walk the bike or scooter. It is the same as they leave at the end of the day. Once they are off school property, they are welcome to jump on their bike or scooter. If you as parents also ride a bike or scooter with your child to school, please do the same so we all can be examples of following the safety rules at school.
Thank you!
Be A Buffalo
It's Already September!
Holy Cow! Times flies when we are having fun and learning a ton! Speaking of holy cow, our annual Fall Festival is only 4 days away! Messages and flyers have been sent home. If you have missed anything, please contact your child's teacher or the front office.
I want to introduce you to what I call Sticky Core Values. These values are sticky because they are connected to a story. It's the story that helps a person connect to and remember the core value. You will find that the story becomes the name of the sticky core value because it is easier to remember and it creates a better connection to the value. For instance, one of my Sticky Core Values is "Build a Handrail." There is a story to that, but it reminds me that one of my values is that I am able to do some hard things even though I don't think I can or I don't really want to. Throughout this year, I will share with you some of my own sticky core values and the personal stories behind them.
Regarding the Explorer sticky core values at Foothill, I would like everyone's input. What are the core values we want our students to integrate into their lives not only while they are at school, but also at home and in public? What can we as adults in their lives exemplify? What stories can we attach to them to make them "sticky"?
One sticky core value I would like to make the list of the Explorer Way is "Be a Buffalo." Do you know the difference between how buffalo and cattle react to a storm? Here is a link to a story behind "Be a Buffalo." This would be a great opportunity to talk to your child(ren) about how to face their "what if," "I can't," and "I fear" dialogues they have with themselves and any other events that happen that arent' exactly how they want them. Share with them how you have been able to "Be a Buffalo" in your own life. Help them to see where and how they have already been able to face some of their storms. "Be a Buffalo" is about being resilient and responding to events out of our control in the best, most healthy way possible with the understanding that the outcome may still be something we want to happen. After all, the buffalo still experience the storm.
