Emily Roberts

Ballroom Dance Company Director

& Varsity Coach

Emily began taking dance lessons in Connecticut from the moment she could walk. Everything from ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop and even folk dancing was simply another opportunity for this shy young girl to move out of her comfort zone. Around the time Emily turned 12, the TV show Dancing With the Stars was becoming more popular. As soon as she saw the cast on their live tour, she knew that’s what she wanted to do.

As a Pro-Am student, Emily was instructed by some of the best coaches in the business and competed in all styles from International Ballroom and Latin to American Rhythm and Smooth. She heard about BYU's ballroom program, quickly applied, and was given a dance scholarship as well as placement on their team. As a member of the BYU Ballroom Touring company, she enjoyed performing in venues all over the United States as well as England, Scotland and Wales. She was also on the Blackpool team that won the British Formation Championships in 2016.

Emily has taught both American and International style classes at BYU, BYU Youth Ballroom Summer Camp sessions, BYU Youth Junior Ballroom and Latin Formation teams as well as being a major support for both the Provo, UT and Stamford, CT cultural celebrations. Emily also had the opportunity to guest lecture and perform for The Juilliard School in New York City.

She is a two-time World Amateur Smooth champion, Pro-Am Champion (both as student and instructor), Blackpool Ballroom Formation Champion, US National Formation Champion, Rising Star and Professional Smooth finalist in many competitions. Emily is also a member of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) and the National Dance Council of America (NDCA).

Under her direction, the Cedar Valley High School program has won 17 (and counting) state formation titles and was the top high school program at the U.S. National Formation Championships in 2023 & 2024.

She is available for private lessons in all styles (Int. Ballroom, Int. Latin, Am. Smooth, Am. Rhythm) both open and closed (syllabus) couples.

Charlie Roberts

Assistant Director / Coach

Charlie started performing on stages at the age of five. With little opportunity for traditional training, Charlie took every chance available to him to learn new styles of dance from musical theater and summer workshops to show choirs and dance recitals. Before leaving for college he had created a reputation for himself as he began choreographing for local high school musical programs and show choirs, winning regional awards at competitions all over the West Coast.

As a student at Brigham Young University, Charlie signed up for every dance class available including tap, folk dance, jazz, and ballroom. Charlie quickly prepared and auditioned for the ballroom dance program where he danced for every team including placement on the BYU Ballroom Dance Touring Company. His participation with the company allowed him to tour all over the U.S. as well as England, Germany, Switzerland, and China. As a member of the team, Charlie was featured in the documentary “Full Circle” about the company’s tour to China as well as on several Chinese news stations.

Charlie has taught both American and International style classes at BYU, was a youth dance camp counselor and guest instructor at the BYU Youth Ballroom Summer Camp, a former coach for BYU Youth Junior Ballroom and Latin Formation teams as well as being a major support for both the Provo, UT and Stamford, CT cultural celebrations. Charlie also had the opportunity to guest lecture and perform for The Juilliard School in New York City.

He is a two-time World Amateur Smooth Champion, U.S. National Amateur Smooth Champion, Blackpool Ballroom Formation Champion, US National Formation Champion, and Rising Star and Professional Smooth finalist in many competitions. Charlie is also a member of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) and the National Dance Council of America (NDCA).

He teaches private lessons in all styles (Int. Ballroom, Int. Latin, Am. Smooth, Am. Rhythm) both open and closed (syllabus) couples.

Jill Bitner (Coach Bill)

JV Coach

I started my love of ballroom as a freshman at BYU, when I saw the ballroom team perform and knew I HAD to do it. After lots of hard work, I was able to dance on the BYU Ballroom Dance Touring Company for three years, including a year on the Blackpool standard team!

I also taught ballroom at BYU for 10 years, both as a student and part-time faculty eventually directing two of their ensemble teams.

Since then, I got married, had four kids, and have lived in more places than I can count on two hands. But I still love, love, love ballroom dancing, and more than that, I love coaching young people and seeing them do something they can be proud of. And I love CVHS!

Kayla Wakefield

Girl's Team Coach

Kayla started dancing when she was 5 years old at a studio where she trained in jazz, ballet, tap, contemporary, and hip hop. When she was 12, she took her first ballroom dance class and has been in love with it ever since.

Kayla was on the Pleasant Grove High School varsity team, where she was given multiple opportunities to choreograph routines for her team. Having those opportunities grew her love for dance even more and being a coach was an ultimate dream.

Kayla spent four years on Utah Valley University’s Ballroom Dance Touring Team. Her favorite tour with the team was to Blackpool, England. While there, the team attended The Blackpool Dance Festival where she competed in the prestigious British Open Ballroom Formation Title and won!

Kayla is currently a teacher for the Danzinskule Organization. With her sister, they have been teaching an after school elementary class for the last five years. Kayla is excited to join the Cedar Valley Ballroom Program.

Aimee Kennington

Junior Coach

Aimee fell in love with ballroom dancing at the age of 12, and has been dancing ever since. She spent four years on her high school's varsity ballroom dance team before joining the Brigham Young University Ballroom Dance Program as an Incoming Freshman Scholarship recipient.

During her time at BYU, Aimee competed in all styles including cabaret. While she loves all styles, her favorite is Swing. During her time at BYU, she and her husband were three-time Amateur Swing champions.

After graduating from BYU, teaching dance quickly became a passion. She enjoys sharing her love of dance with her students. Aimee was the director of the Pleasant Grove High School Ballroom Program from 2005-2012.

After taking a break to focus on family, she started teaching for Danzinskule in the Elementary Ballroom Program in 2017. She is excited to embark on this new journey as part of the Cedar Valley Ballroom Program.

Aimee lives in Eagle Mountain with her husband and five children.

DJ Conger

Ballroom Company Secretary

DJ has been serving local high school ballroom programs for over a decade. She has supported and trained 5 different head coaches on the ins and outs of the academic ballroom community. DJ was also one of the key advocates for the creation of the ballroom program at CVHS. By regularly inviting the administration to local high school ballroom events, she helped create urgency and a need for the high school to incorporate ballroom into its curriculum and extracurricular opportunities.

THANK YOU DJ!

DJ organized the Utah Ballroom Education Association (UBEA) state competition for three years and has helped to organize 4 ballroom tours including logistics, lodging, catering, and transportation. She is a ballroom mom to many dancers including her own children who now dance at the university level. The CVHS program is lucky to have someone who cares so much about the students, she is the reason students are fed, bandaged, and encouraged on the sidelines.
