The 2024 UMS Pop Choir class is a mighty group that was willing and ready to sing! The first weeks of Pop Choir are all about building strong fundamental skills. Throughout our time together, we learned the importance of warming up your voice before singing, training our ears through learning solfege, finding choreography that doesn't compromise our singing voices, and stage presence.
Solfege provides a framework for melodies by establishing recognizable relationships between pitches/intervals, and training your ear to hear patterns. It is an excellent system for learning the structure behind music, and is a fundamental concept of ear training.

Develop Craft: I can blend my voice with the voices around me to sound like a cohesive ensemble by listening and shaping my vowels.
Engage & Persist: I can use my understanding of rhythm and solfege to help me work through a challenging spot.
Express: I can use dynamics (singing loud/soft) to help create this emotion in the song.
Stretch & Explore: I understand the elements of Jazz music are different from choral and pop music that you are used to hearing and singing.
Understand the Art World: I can demonstrate engaged participation and cooperation with my classmates as a choir and can conduct myself in a way that contributes to the good of the group.
