The LMS Building Instruments class provides an opportunity for students to develop their engineering skills while learning how to produce sound in a variety of ways. First, we learned how sound is produced, through vibrations of energy. This could be through water waves or sound waves.
Throughout the trimester, we built four different types of musical instruments out of recyclable materials seen below.
Chordophones: Instruments that produce sound by strumming or plucking a stretched string.
Aerophones: Instruments that produce sound by pushing vibrating columns of air through them.
Membranophones: Instruments that produce sound by striking, rubbing, or singing into a stretched membrane.
Idiophones: Instruments that produce sound through vibrating themselves when struck, shaken, or scraped.
Develop Craft: I can construct musical instruments that produce sound waves out of recycled materials.
Envision: What will my work look, sound, or feel like when it’s finished? What steps will I take to complete my work?
Engage and Persist: How can I work through mistakes or problems to find solutions?
Reflect: What did I find most challenging and how did I overcome this challenge?
Arts classes at AACA use the Studio Habits of Mind as a framework for guiding student learning. These 8 habits describe the learning and thinking processes that students engage in as they create art, music, drama, and dance with us. Look for these habits throughout the project descriptions in arts classes portfolios to better understand the learning goals we are working on with your children.
