Third grade began their year by building their ensemble. We participated in daily warm-up activities that prepared our voices, bodies, and minds for an acting performance. As the year progressed, we learned about the history of Documentary Style theatre and how it is used today to share true stories with audiences around the world.
Third graders then watched news reports about kids doing incredible acts of kindness: such as Willa Thomas who started a swimming relay fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House, Nick Steber who uses money he earns cutting grass to feed the homeless and their pets, and also the 2022 Little League World Series where a young athlete showed tremendous support to the pitcher on the opposing team. The students then broke into small groups to write and stage their favorite act of kindness. The trimester culminated in a performance with Kindergarten and 2nd grade students.
Develop Craft: I can write a play.
Engage & Persist: I can collaborate with my ensemble to write and stage skits based on true events.
Stretch & Explore: I can use my writing and performing skills to create a production.
Students kicked off Trimester 2 putting their theatre skills to work for preschool's annual Polar Express Adventure! They learned the fundamentals of set design and perspective drawing to create the illusion of looking out a train window. The best were used in our train wall art, and the others made beautiful decorations for preschool's Christmas program.
Theatre can be musical as well! Students practiced working on their breath support, diction, and projection all through some fun vocal exercises and singing practices.
We also worked to practice our song "Do you hear what I hear?" as a class. They were a smash at the Christmas program!
Third grade learned about the history and practice of dramaturgy. They learned the difference between primary and secondary resources and used them to influence their dramatic writing. After reading "I Survived the Great Chicago Fire" in their homeroom and examining letters from survivors in drama, they wrote monologues speaking from the expereince of a child fleeing the fire themselves.
Watch as Landon performs a monologue he wrote! It was extra special to our audience members because he wrote them into his script!
Lily did an excellent job memorizing her lines and adding great actions into her performance!
Third grade rounded out the year studying improvisation. Improvisation is the art of creating theatre in the moment. It demands that the actors think creatively on their feet and work as an ensemble. This was my FAVORITE unit for third grade this year. I was not only impressed by their wit and humor, but equally impressed in their ability to collaborate with other and support their classmates.
Our year culminated in a performance for preschool students! The 3rd grade cast did an excellent job including their preschool classmates into the show!
Look how the 3rd grade students model patience and kindness towards their preschool actors! They help guide them through this improv activity "Guess Who is Coming to Dinner?"
