Teacher notes
Winter Animals is made in Google Slides and gives learners a choice of stories or songs to listen to:
Deer: A song called Deer Dancing Round a Broken Mirror by Bruce Cockburn and Rik Emmet.
Owl: A TVO short about Kenojuak Ashevak and her painting, The Enchanted Owl.
Raven: The Raven and the Owl, an Inuit legend put to song. There are two versions: one by The National Film Board of Canada and one by Becky Han.
Fox: The Fox and the Whale, a 2016 Canadian animated short film directed by Robin Joseph.
Skater: a 1980 animated film from the National Film Board of Canada narrated by the author of the story, Roch Carrier. There is a link to a 2023 riff on this story called the Hockey Jersey.
There are follow up activities in a Google Form.
To make your own activity like this or get a copy of the form to use with learners, please contact tracey@alphaplus.ca.
How I made this
I started the slides presentation in session 2 of the Building digital skills with Google workshops done in partnership with EdTechTeacher and posted it here. These slides are shared with Anyone with the link has Viewer access. The slide presentation works best embedded into a Google site. This way the users see it as a presentation.
I made the form in session 3. It uses sections to create branching scenarios. The Log Driver's Waltz form does the same thing with a different purpose. In this case, the branches let users make choices about what they want to do. In the Log Driver's Waltz example, users can keep trying a question until they get the correct answer.
The final activity was originally made on a Jamboard. Jamboard was discontinued on October 1, 2024. I redid the activity in slides. These slides are shared with Anyone with the link has Editor access so they can fill in the boxes. The slide presentation not embedded in the Google site because users cannot edit (fill in the boxes) in the embedded version.
Here is how I made the slides: https://alphaplus.ca/resources/collaborative-workspaces-in-slides
Embedding activities into Google sites
The slide deck and form above are embedded and then I resized the embed windows so you can see the whole slide and form on this page.
This works well if you want to have other content on the page, but it can get unwieldy.
What if you want people to see a whole document or slide show on one page?
It can be awkward to copy-and-paste information from Docs in Google sites. Full-page embed is a great option.
Full-page embed option
You can embed Google Docs -- and Slides -- as full web pages.
Richard Byrne explains how in this video and shows an example of an embedded Doc.. To see the slide show as a full page embed, click here.
