I’m looking forward to an exciting year with all of my students. This website is organized to help you find information about my Social Studies curriculum and class expectations. You can also learn more about the various electives I will cover this year. I appreciate you taking the time to read through my syllabus and become familiar with my teaching philosophies.
This will be my 5th year at ACDS and I am looking forward to a great one. I am a Middle School teacher through and through and have had experience with 6th through 8th grade. I have a year of exciting activities and learning planned for my students and every class will utilize a variety of formats to teach concepts to allow every student to connect to the material. This year’s students will experience many activities: historical simulations, discussions, dramatic re-creations, as well as more traditional lectures and essays.
I hope that this is the first of many contacts with you over the course of the year. Open lines of communication between teachers, students, and parents are essential to a positive educational experience. I encourage you to contact me whenever you wish to discuss the class or your child’s progress. With your help we can make this a great year for you and your child. As a first step in our communication I hope you will consider filling out my parent questionnaire to help me get to know your child better. You can find the link in the helpful links section
Fun fact: I have published a paper entitled "The Economics of the Union Draft: Institutional Failure and Manipulation of the Labor Market During the Civil War" which you can find here.
I graduated from Wellesley College with a BA in Economics. I received my teaching credential in Social Science from San Jose State University, and have over 20 years of middle school teaching experience in public and private schools.
Helping children find their spark in education has always been a focus for me. I love learning and believe children have a natural curiosity about the world but sometimes are not encouraged to explore in a way that meets their needs. Teaching children allows me to be a part of that learning journey.
I started teaching at ACDS in 2022 and have found it to be a place where both children and teachers find joy in learning. As a teacher, I have always believed that Social Studies is not about memorizing facts and route recitations, but should be about asking questions and learning how to find the answers. ACDS allows kids to be kids and still challenges them to have big thoughts and dreams.
