ACORNS

Advancing California Opportunities to Renew Native health Systems (ACORNS) is a five-year initiative funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through the Good Health and Wellness in Indian Country (GHWIC) program. The project supports American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) communities throughout California in designing and implementing culturally grounded strategies to reduce death and disability related to commercial tobacco use, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, obesity, and other chronic disease risk factors. ACORNS strengthens Tribal capacity and empowers communities to lead sustainable initiatives grounded in Native knowledge and sovereignty.  

The ACORNS project is designed to improve population health and wellness by helping Tribes and Tribal Health Programs implement culturally tailored health interventions, policies, and systems changes. These efforts emphasize traditional AIAN practices and multi-disciplinary, team-based care to prevent and manage chronic diseases. Additionally, CRIHB provides Tribes, Tribal Health Programs, and Urban Indian Organizations in the California Indian Health Service (IHS) Administrative Area with key resources, including training, technical assistance, partnership development, and health communication strategies, to strengthen and support community health initiatives.
