Kids Who Have Finished a "Teach Your Monster to Read" Map during the 2025-2026 school year.
MAP FINISHERS GALLERY
Teach Your Monster to Read is an online resource we love to use during technology specials at AELS. Not only does it help us review our phonics knowledge, it helps us practice using our touchscreen Chromebooks.
There are three 'maps'Â in Teach Your Monster to Read.
The first map ('First Steps') reviews 31 letter-sound combinations: s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, ck, e, y, r, h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss, j, qu, v, w, x, y, z, zz.
The second map ('Fun With Words') reviews new letter-sound combinations: ch, sh, th (voiced and unvoiced), ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, ear, are, ure, and er. There is also more practice with "tricky" words like he, she, the, to, we, me, be, was, no, go, my, you, they, her, all, are, said, so, have, like, some, come, were, there, little, one, do, when, out, and what.
The third map ('Champion Reader') introduces alternative sound spellings (such as /ai/ used in words like eight or they). It also introduces alternative pronunciations, like the difference between fin and find.
The photo gallery below is students who have finished the first or even the second map. They are mostly first graders but kindergarteners are starting to finish maps too, so check back soon!
Some of these images have been edited or replaced with a monster icon due to student media release permissions.
