2024-2025
The Chemii end-of-year banquet was held in the Tippi Alumni center in May 2025 just prior to graduation. Graduating seniors are pictured above. The seniors put together paper-plate awards for the faculty and Tim received the Plate Rick Award because the lab is filled with "colorful solutions and questionable engineering fixes."
The end of the spring semester is the time for graduate school and summer internship offers. In a remarkably challenging past few months for science, with rescinded graduate school offers and loss of funding for NSF-REU sites, I'm pleased to report that all members of the Chapp lab have offers in hand!
Dilani Frorup ('25) has accepted a graduate school offer from UC Riverside
Kat Lynch ('25) has also accepted a graduate school offer at UC Riverside
Both Kat and Dilani will pursue PhD's in inorganic chemistry
Sophie Mackley ('27) has an internship at Oak Ridge National Lab with Dr. Santa Jansone-Popova working on recovery of rare earth metals.
Sam Oakes ('27) has an internship at the Colorado School of Mines working with Dr. Jihye Kim on battery recycling.
Shyann Rulander ('27) has an internship at SUNY Binghamton and was recently featured in this news release about her summer work.
Pictured above are (left to right ): Kat Lynch ('25), Sam Oakes ('27), Sophie Mackley ('27), Shyann Rulander ('27), and Dilani Frorup ('25). Kat and Dilani presented their posters in the INORG division and Sam, Sophie, and Shyann presented their poster in the CHED division.
In March 2025, several Allegheny Chemistry and Biochemistry majors attended the spring ACS National Meeting in San Diego to present their research.
2023-2024
The spring 2024 Chemii banquet had a great turnout and marked Tim's last semester as Department Chair. Pictured below is most of the research group from the spring (from left to right): Kat Lynch ('25), Shyann Rulander ('27), Jacob Zoll ('24), Sophie Mackley ('27) and Tim.
Jacob Zoll ('24): Jacob has been accepted to grad school at Indiana University.

In his first semester of graduate school he loved TAing for intro chem, going to trivia night and supporting the IU football team. Jacob is looking forward to beginning research in the lab this upcoming semester.

2021-2022
The missed summer research opportunity in 2020 resulted in a huge contingent of students on campus in the Chemistry Department for the summer of 2021 and we were able to take most of them to the Spring 2022 ACS National Conference in San Diego. A group photo from the trip is pictured below.
At the conference, Sam ('22) and Ryan ('23) presented a poster on their FLP project while David ('22) presented his work on the synthesis of new hydrogenase mimics.
The research group was large for the spring 2022 semester. In addition to David Ahlers ('22), Sam Rundquist ('22), and Ryan Mantione ('23) (front row left), we also had Jenna Halenda ('23), Andrew Briercheck ('23), and Bill Nese ('23) (back row) join the group to get more experience doing synthetic inorganic chemistry.
Sam and David graduated in May 2022 (pictured below at the Chemii end of year banquet, just a little before graduation day).
Sam Rundquist ('22): Sam has a job lined up working at Materion.
update spring 2023: After a year in industry, Sam is looking at applying to grad school for the fall 2023 admissions cycle.

David Ahlers ('22): David has landed a job at American Colors in Sandusky, OH.
update spring 2024: David is still with American Colors but has moved to their branch in Nashville, TN and says that the nice weather allows for a more year-round opportunity to continue playing Ultimate Frisbee.
2020-2021
We were back on campus for the start of the fall 2020 semester and after much deliberation, we were able to run a somewhat normal summer research program on campus. Pictured below (left to right): Sam Rundquist '22, Ryan Mantione '23, Tim, and David Ahlers '22
2019-2020
Covid-19 resulted in Allegheny College going remote in March. Unfortunately, that meant no end of the year celebrations for senior project students Anh Ta ('20) and Diana Pendleton ('20). However, Diana was able to return for an in-person graduation ceremony in 2021 (photo below)
Anh Ta '20 (comp student 2019-2020): After graduating from Allegheny, Anh became an analyst for Citi doing portfolio evaluation for alternative energy investments.
Diana Pendleton '20 (comp student 2019-2020): After finishing up at Allegheny, Diana went on to Veterinary School at the University of Minnesota.
update spring 2022: Diana is doing summer research at the University of Minnesota college of veterinary medicine. Her project focuses on a spinal disease in dogs called Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) that happens spontaneously and can cause paralysis and even death if not addressed in a timely manner. She's looking to use MRI to generate early detection for weak disc in dogs that have the potential to herniate due to IVDD.
