Genius Hour is an inquiry-driven, passion-based classroom strategy designed to excite and engage students through the unrestrained joy of learning. We accomplish this by setting aside time in our schedules when students are able to learn about and create whatever they want, unencumbered by teacher control.
Genius hour allows you to explore your own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom.
It provides a choice in what you learn every week.
The genius project is self selected, as long as it taps into one of the menu choices below.
1. You must work ALONE. This is about conjuring YOUR inner genius, creativity, passions, and intelligence.
2. Choose a project that is new to you AND something you would not normally do in another academic class.
3. You must produce a product, invention, or achieve some sort of goal. You may create, build, invent, write, discover, or design.
4. You must write up a proposal and pitch it to your teacher that includes purpose, audience, timeline and resources you will need to complete the project.
5. Reflect each week on a personal blog. We will create this together in class.
6. You will present your project and reflect on the process in a 3-5 minute TED-style talk.
7. The goal of genius hour is for YOU to figure out your your step-by-step process, answer your own questions, and navigate how YOU are going to get to your end goal. Most of this project is your goal setting and time management. If, at any moment, you feel lost, overwhelmed, or uninspired, you must set a meeting with me to find a solution. HOWEVER, I am a facilitator in this project and will not just solve your problems for you. YOU create your own learning.
8. RECOMMENDED: Find an adult to be your mentor and interview them. You can seek expert knowledge in our community or around the world. It can be someone within school, in the community, or in the business world. They MUST have some knowledge to help you with your project.
9. EXPLORE YOUR PASSIONS AND LEARN!
