Dear Partners in Learning,
I have many goals about teaching math. Sure, I want my students to know how to add fractions and convert measurements. But those are subgoals to a bigger picture. My ultimate goals are that my students leave me with the tools needed to navigate this ever-changing world, that they have the foundation to be successful in higher studies in mathematics, that they can use deductive reasoning to unravel problems that arise even out of the classroom, and that they find a love for mathematics. It really it a beautiful subject.
1) Respect yourself, me, and your classmates at all times. Use kind words, encourage often, and help when needed. Raise your hand to speak, so we can all be heard. Listen when others are speaking. We are in this together.
2) Respect your environment and school property. Keep your classroom, the bathroom, and the school clean. Trash goes in the trashcan. I cannot clean up after 90+ students every day. Please don't leave trash and old food in the desks. It's gross.
3) You need to ask permission to leave the classroom.
4) Come to class prepared. A pencil is a necessity in math. Show up on time with all needed materials, ready to learn. Students are only permitted to go to their lockers in the morning and after lunch, so plan accordingly.
5) Come in (quietly), sit down, take out your materials, and begin your daily warm-up.
6) Discipline will be handled as it is outlined in the student handbook.
7) Cheating on tests, quizzes or homework will result in a zero. No exceptions.
8) When you are absent it is YOUR responsibility to get the work. All missing work must be made up, this includes notes, in-class assignments, and homework.
9) All personal electronics should be locked in a locker or kept away, unless direct permission has been given otherwise. Cell phones will be confiscated and sent to the office.
10) Be responsible for your own learning. Use I words, not "my mom, my dad, my sister, my dog...."
11) Strive to be your best. Produce decent work and stay on task. Positively participate in group activities. Represent yourself with pride, and show you take your education seriously and know it pays itself off in the end.
12) Don't be afraid of me. I'm here for you. I want to see you excel. I will always help you.
13) Have fun!
1) Completed Assignments should be turned in to each class's designated bin. Nothing should be placed on my desk because it will get lost.
2) Test and Quiz Corrections: Students have an opportunity to do corrections and earn half their points back for all tests and quizzes. Students that choose to do corrections must complete those corrections within 2 weeks from when the graded assignment has been given back. Grades will be updated promptly.
Corrections should be on a correction paper, though any loose leaf will do. And MUST contain the following or they will be given back with no adjusted grade.
1—Number the problem(s) being corrected and rewrite the question.
2—Completely show work with the correct answer
3—Write a brief description of the error that was made on the original test.
4—Submit the original test/quiz stapled behind the correction sheet.
Any corrections that are a list of letters with no explanations will not receive credit. No exceptions.
3) Late Work: In the first and second quarters all late grades will be given a maximum grade of 80%. In the third and fourth quarters, students will be given a maximum grade of 70%. This rule applies to IXLs and homework even if full credit was earned.
4) Absentee Work: If students are absent, they can find any missing handouts on my wall in the front of the room. They are required to complete all assignments and homework that were missed. . After an established time, all missing work will follow the procedure for late work.
