Astounding  Artworks

Icons of Malaysia series by Year 6 students

The Year 6 students have chosen to celebrate 5 icons of our wonderful host country Malaysia! Our amazing Year 6 artists have collaborated once again to create 5 individual and unique artworks based on the work of the American Realist Artist Chuck Close.

Close is famous for his pixelated paintings which when viewed close up are quite abstract as they are made up of individual small squares or pixels. However when viewed from afar the realistic image is revealed. For our take on Close’s work the students are given a small cardboard square which they then further pixilate into yet smaller squares which they then paint with incredible care.

Ferns at Bukit Kiara by Charlotte Sullivan, parent

Medium: Oil on Canvas

Framed size: 30 x 30 inches

"Ferns at Bukit Kiara' is both a celebration of greens, and of the magical chaos that can be found in the jungle.  Last summer, I spent a lot of time walking at Bukit Kiara.  There's something fascinating about the way the sun filters through the dense foliage, and illuminates some bits of the plants, but not others.  I love capturing moments of quiet, beautiful light.  This painting comes from one of a series of 20 studies I did while at an artist residency in February, 2022."

Charlotte Sullivan is an American artist, with two children attending Alice Smith.  She received her BFA in painting from Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn NY.  Her current work is inspired by the diverse flora and fauna of Malaysia, where she currently lives.  Recently, Charlotte took part in an artist residency program at Rimbun Dahan, in Kuang. Before moving to Malaysia, Charlotte taught oil painting at a prestigious private art school for 17 years and had her own business painting corporate and residential murals. Her work can be found in private collections in the USA, the UK, Romania, Singapore and Malaysia.

3D Art Sculptures by Year 7 to Year 10 students

These wonderful sculptures have been made by the students of the Art Sculpture ECA who worked in collaboration with local artist Alice Chang. The students have produced work in response to the theme of 'Sustainability' and this incredibly rich and varied collection of pieces reflects the very individual and personal ideas students have about this topic. Working with recycled materials, the students have transformed everyday waste into mature and sophisticated artworks that would not look out of place in a contemporary art gallery.

The Elephant Journey
by Mischa, Year 7

"I made this sculpture because I really like elephants and they link to sustainability because their habitat is being destroyed and they're endangered. There are many problems for elephants like poachers and deforestation. However, if we can save and protect them we can sustain their species."

The bid starts at RM 750

Mittens
by Alexis & Claudia, Year 8

"The cat's name is Mittens and is made up of recyclable material such as styrofoam and broken material which would normally be thrown away. Our cat is based on the Chinese lucky cat and whoever buys it will gain luck, prosperity and wealth."

The bid starts at RM 750

Permata Dari Hutan -  Gems of the Jungle
by Thomas, Year 9
"This vase is just like nature - strong yet fragile when mistreated, well balanced yet not perfect and raw, like a volcano which builds itself with every eruption. This piece represents the lush, green forests all around Malaysia and connects you to the wild nature living inside this paradise which are displayed as gems."

The bid starts at RM 750

Two Sided Whale
by Samyak, Year 7
"This piece shows  the two sides of a whale, one side being very glass-like and modern, the other being bright and colourful."

The bid starts at RM 750

The Rafflesia
by Alessandra, Year 10
"It fits the theme of sustainability well, as it is an endangered species of flower. I also chose to do it because it is a flower that is commonly found in Malaysia, a place that is important to me."

The bid starts at RM 750

The Traveler's Globe
by Elsa, Effie and Ira, Year 7
"The Traveler's Globe reminds us to protect our home. However, many species around the world are endangered, including the Eastern Lowland Gorilla and  Hawksbill turtle. Species are endangered and extinct because of climate change, pollution and deforestation."
