Why might student visit a school counsellor?

Some students visit the school counsellor for short periods, they may talk about relationship issues, lack of self confidence or self esteem, for others the counselling service maybe a longer support system. The counselling service is a private and confidential space available for all students. The service provides individual, group and family therapy.

What happens in counselling sessions?

It is the aim of counselling to help students increase their awareness and understanding of situations. They are empowered to make choices and face challenges in a supportive therapeutic environment. Students have the opportunity to explore various aspects of their life and feelings in a safe and non-judgmental environment. Students may talk freely and openly in a way that may be difficult to do with friends, family or members of staff.

When are the counselling sessions?

Session are arranged between the student and counsellor at a point that is mutually convenient, this may often be during lesson time. Subject teachers are given prior notice when a student is going to miss a lesson to attend counselling.

How long is a session and how long does a student remain in counselling?

A session lasts 50 minutes and they are as regular as needed by the student. It is most common for a student to be meeting with a counsellor on a weekly basis and for as long as both mutually agree is beneficial. The work between the counsellor and student is regularly reviewed to help with identifying areas of progression and for further development.

Do we inform a student’s family if the student is attending counselling?

The counsellor works within a professional framework of confidentiality and adheres to the Code of Ethics set by the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy. All personal information about a student will be protected against improper disclosure at all times. If there is a concern about a child’s safety, or that of others, confidentiality will have to be extended. At this point parents may be informed and involved. The counsellor will also contract with the student at the beginning of counselling, to make them aware of the limitations and boundaries around confidentiality.
