Dear Grade 9 Parent
In Grade 10 your child will now fall under the Further Education and Training (FET) category and will be preparing to write the National Senior Certificate (NSC) at the end of Grade 12.
In as much as this is a daunting task, the University entrance requirements are designed in such a way that these decisions have to made at Grade 9 level. Therefore it is imperative that the correct choices are made.
Your child has to utilize all the tools that have been provided as well do extra research on his/her own on possible career choices so that he/she then chooses the correct subjects.
As a parent you can assist by encouraging your child to interact with various professionals in the field, engage in job shadowing, utilize the internet, visit tertiary institutions and receive career counselling. It is important that your child keeps his/her options open and not be limited to a few choices. In this regard the CAO form (this is the common form used by most tertiary institutions in KZN which is sent to a Central Application Office) has options for 6 possible choices. At Al – Falaah College we encourage learners to fill in all six options. Al – Falaah offers all the gateway subjects that are required for University entry.
When making subject choices, your child must be guided by his/her interests, values, goals, aptitudes and talents.. Please do not be tempted to steer your child in the direction of your dreams and goals. Neither should they be influenced by factors like peer pressure and choose subjects that their friends are choosing or which teacher teaches the subject.
