The Freshman Academy is about exploration. We encourage students to explore classes and experience all the academies have to offer in order to better identify what career(s) they are most interested in exploring during their time in high school.
Every fall (in October), Alexandria Area High School hosts our annual Freshman Career Expo, a dynamic event designed to ignite students curiosity and introduce them to a wide spectrum of exciting career possibilities – all in one convenient location.
What to Expect:
Inspirational Kickoff: The day begins with an engaging keynote address delivered by an AAHS alumni. Students get to hear their story, gain valuable insights, and see what's possible after graduation.
Explore Diverse Industries: In our main gym, students experience a bustling hub of opportunity! They can connect directly with representatives from approximately 40-50 local businesses spanning various career pathways. Students are encouraged to ask questions, learn about different roles, and discover career paths they might never have considered.
Dive Deeper with Speaker Sessions: Students choose two career speaker sessions that pique your interest. These focused presentations offer a more in-depth look at specific industries, the skills needed to succeed, and potential career options. This is a great opportunity for students to learn directly from professionals in their fields.
Why Attend?
The Freshman Career Expo is a chance for students to:
Explore a multitude of career options early in their high school career.
Gain firsthand knowledge from industry professionals and business leaders.
Network and make valuable connections.
Start thinking about their future and potential career paths.
Discover opportunities right here in their own community and beyond.
As a freshman, students gain a unique advantage through our Freshman Academy Network (FAN) Coach program. Imagine having your own dedicated mentor, working closely with a small group (just 5-6 students!). This takes place through their Health 9 class. Over six sessions each semester, our FAN Coaches guide students in developing the essential skills outlined in our Portrait of a Graduate – the very qualities that will help them thrive in high school and beyond. This personalized coaching is designed to help support students reflect on their skills and encourage them to identify ways in which they can further their skill development!
During registration their freshman year, students choose the career academy they will enter into their sophomore year. Students receive guidance and several exploration opportunities throughout the year to prepare them for their academy decision. They choose one of three academies to enter into. Students are allowed to switch academies should they choose to later. They are also allowed to take classes across academies.
Senior Leaders spend time in freshman advisories throughout the year providing mentorship in the following areas:
Becoming familiar with AAHS
Skill development
Registration and course planning
Digital portfolio development
Building connections
