A very warm welcome back for the Summer term and it has certainly felt like Summer this week with the lovely weather. This morning I had the pleasure of accompanying some of our Y5 and Y6 pupils to Wood Green Common and plant seedlings as part of a plant fostering initiative that Alexandra and other local schools have been involved in. The children all worked hard to fill our designated flower bed full of plants and seedlings and we look forward to watching them grow.
Many of you will have noticed the development of the caretaker’s house is now underway and fencing and scaffolding has been erected. Once fully refurbished, this will be home to a resourced SEND provision for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs for pupils in Haringey. We plan to open in September 2025 and are currently recruiting staff for the provision. We are excited about this project and the opportunity to develop the caretaker’s house and create a new play area on the site of the staff car park. Thank you to breakfast club and after school club who have had to relocate during the works. We believe the temporary disruption will be worth it and we look forward to expanding our school and opening the provision in the Autumn.
Please came and join us on Wednesday 7th May at 8:50 am in the main hall to start planning for our summer fair! we need you help to make this exciting event even more successful than it was last year!
Last week, we held a special assembly to mark Stephen Lawrence Day, which takes place each year on 22nd April. This day is observed across the UK to remember Stephen Lawrence, who was tragically murdered at the age of 18 in an unprovoked racist attack.
Stephen Lawrence Day is a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up against all forms of discrimination. It offers us an opportunity to come together as a school community to honour Stephen’s life, reflect on the impact of racism and remind children of our commitment to stand up against discrimination.
The EYFS classes had a cracking start to the new term with a wonderful opportunity to welcome some very special visitors — newly hatched chicks! The children watched with fascination as the eggs gradually hatched, giving them a first-hand experience of the beginning of a life cycle.
The arrival of the chicks provided a fantastic learning opportunity. The children explored the stages of growth and development, deepening their understanding of lifecycles through real-life observation. They also learned about the importance of caring for living things, showing great responsibility and gentleness as they helped look after the chicks. All of the children have been chick crazy with lots of brilliant actives inspired by these very cute visitors.
It has been a truly memorable experience, full of excitement, learning, and wonder!
As part of our Y1 Toys & Games topic the children have been introduced to some games that they may be unfamiliar with. Mr McKenna chess on Tuesday and a group of children have taken a particular interest and even wanted to learn more about the game during their lunchtime!
They have been learning the names of different pieces, how much each piece is worth and the different ways in which they move. They are beginning to understand the ideas behind the opening moves and how to capture their opponent's pieces and defend their own. Future chess champions in the making?
This week, Year 2 have been exploring the music of Gustav Holst. We listened to a variety of his compositions and discussed how different pieces of music can make us feel. Inspired by what we heard, we used Chrome Music Lab to create our own rhythms using a mix of animals and instruments. Finally, we challenged ourselves to create rhythms that reminded us of different animals — a fun and imaginative way to link music with movement and sound!
In Science, Year 2 have been leaping into the fascinating world of animals and humans, with a special focus on the life cycle of a frog. From tiny jelly-like eggs to wriggly tadpoles and finally into fully grown frogs, the children have loved discovering each stage of transformation.
To bring their learning to life, the children also got crafty by creating their very own paper frogs. These colourful creations now decorate our classroom and have been hopping with personality! The activity not only reinforced their understanding of the frog life cycle but also encouraged creativity and fine motor skills. It’s been a fun, hands-on week full of curiosity, questions, and learning!
This half term, Year 2 are exploring sculpture in Art. In our first lesson, we experimented with shape and form by creating our own sculptures using just strips of paper. We thought carefully about how to bend, twist, and fold the paper to make interesting designs. Do you like them?
To kick off their new topic on Ancient Egypt, Year 3 enjoyed a fun filled launch day! The children came dressed as pharaohs and queens ready to travel back in time. Throughout the day they got creative by making colourful Egyptian jewellery, constructing pyramids and learning some Egyptian style dance moves. We look forward to exploring and learning more about the amazing Egyptians this term.
Year 6 at launched into the summer term with an exciting twist—by solving a mysterious classroom "crime"! As part of their immersive introduction to Holes by Louis Sachar, pupils stepped into the shoes of detectives, suspects, and witnesses, piecing together clues and diving deep into character roles. The hands-on activity brought the new book to life, sparking curiosity, teamwork. A thrilling start to a term of reading, adventure, and imagination!
We are continuing to make great use of our wonderful new library! Here is Year 4 Mexico Class enjoying their library time — exploring new books, getting lost in stories, and sharing recommendations with their friends. It’s fantastic to see a love of reading growing across the school.
Today, Year 3 Bolivia Class put on an amazing performance during their assembly! They showcased their learning about Ancient Egypt through dance, music, and rap. We all learned so much about this fascinating civilisation — and even joined in with some of the songs!
The children dressed up and made their own accessories to make the performance feel even more authentic. A big thank you to the Year 3 team and to all the parents for helping to make this such a special celebration of learning.
As part of the regeneration and improvements to Wood Green Common, our pupils have taken part in a plant fostering scheme funded by Haringey Council and supported by an organisation called Black Roots. Over the last year and a half, Black Roots have run three workshops at Alexandra with our Y5 and Y6 pupils. The children planted seedlings and looked after their plants and today we planted them in a designated flower bed in the new playground area of Wood Green common. Look out for the Alexandra Primary School sign when the park re-opens in June.
We’re very proud of our choir at Alexandra. They’ve performed at both the O2 and the Royal Albert Hall this year. It’s open to anyone in years 3,4,5 and 6 and takes place on Thursday mornings 8 - 8.45am.
The Year 6's enjoyed ice lollies this week as they've all been working so hard on their MOCK SATs! Some of our Reading Club children took a walk to Iceland to pick them up!
Over the past two weeks, we have been focusing on the experiences of children who join our school with little or no English. As part of this work, we interviewed some of our pupils about their journeys and what helped them settle in. We are using their feedback to improve our New Arrivals Policy and procedures, ensuring that every child feels welcome, supported, and included.
We are incredibly proud of the diversity in our school community and the rich variety of languages spoken by our children and families. Over the coming months, we will be focusing on finding new ways to share and celebrate the different languages spoken across our school.
In History, year 5 have been exploring artefacts from Ancient Greece. They examined a range of objects and discussed what these items can tell us about life during that time. It was a great opportunity to ask questions, make observations, and deepen their understanding of this fascinating ancient civilisation.
Our lost property box is bursting at the seams!
Over the past few weeks, we’ve collected a large number of jumpers, water bottles, lunchboxes, coats, and even shoes that have been left behind. Many of these items are unnamed, making it difficult to return them to their rightful owners.
We kindly ask all parents and carers to stop by the lost property area, located near the school office, and check if any items belong to your child. Any unclaimed items will be donated to charity by the end of term.
To help reduce lost property in the future, please ensure all belongings are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Thank you for your support in helping us reunite these items with their owners.
We are continuing to recognise the dedication and effort that some children and their families are making to improve attendance and to celebrate this, we are continuing to award children for 100% Attendance for the Week.
