As we reach the end of January, it is lovely to reflect on some very visible developments around our school site. The refurbishment of the caretaker’s house is now nearing completion and the new facilities are looking fantastic. We are particularly pleased with the new play area and, all being well, we are looking forward to opening it after half term. I know this will be an exciting addition for our school.
The coming weeks are also full of engaging events that enrich our curriculum and learning experiences. On Friday 6th February we will be taking part in NNPC Number Day – don’t forget to wear something with a number on it! This will be followed by Safer Internet Day on Tuesday 10th February, an important opportunity to reinforce key messages about staying safe online. On Wednesday 11th February we will have No Pens Day, when we will be putting down our pens and focusing on spoken language and communication skills.
These events are a valuable part of our curriculum, helping to bring learning to life and providing meaningful opportunities for our pupils to develop key skills. Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
This week, our Year 2 class put on a fantastic assembly that celebrated their learning journey over the last term. The children showcased a wide range of skills and creativity. They explored African drumming and dancing, adding cultural richness to their learning.
In science, they conducted an exciting experiment to see which balls bounce the highest, giving them a hands-on understanding of materials. They confidently demonstrated their Spanish language skills and dramatically recreated the Great Fire of London, making history come alive for everyone.
The musical finale was a highlight, with the children playing the glockenspiel and filling the room with beautiful sounds. A standout moment was when one child performed a solo, capturing the spirit of our school community.
Well done, Chile class! We are all proud of you.
This week, our Year 2 children have been exploring the fascinating world of art and creativity through an inspiring project that beautifully connects visual arts and literacy.
Our Year 2s have been learning about the techniques of collage, drawing inspiration from the artist Henri Matisse. His approach to creating art has sparked incredible imagination among our children. They've been learning how to cut, arrange and layer different materials to create expressive artwork.
The highlight of this project has been the children's penguin collages. These creations not only showcase their artistic skills but also demonstrate their ability to interpret and reimagine visual concepts.
As the children created their penguin masterpieces, they have also been exploring the fascinating environments of the North and South Poles in their literacy work. This cross-curricular approach helps children make meaningful connections between different areas of learning.
Recently, we had the wonderful opportunity to showcase the incredible mathematical thinking happening across Alexandra Primary.
Our Parent School Governor, Muneerah Ali, joined with our dedicated Maths Lead Teacher, Ms Kennedy, to conduct a learning walk through our school. This collaborative approach allows us to observe and celebrate the mathematical experiences of our children.
What struck us most during this learning walk was the remarkable engagement and confidence of our children. As we visited classrooms, we were truly impressed by how articulate and enthusiastic our children were about mathematics. They didn't just complete mathematical tasks – they could explain their reasoning, demonstrating a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
Watching our children discuss their mathematical thinking with such clarity and enthusiasm was incredibly rewarding. It reinforced our commitment to creating a learning environment where children not only learn mathematical skills but also develop the ability to communicate and reason mathematically.
This learning walk is just one example of how we continuously monitor and celebrate learning at Alexandra Primary. By bringing together different perspectives, from our dedicated staff and engaged parent governors, we ensure a rich, comprehensive view of our children's educational experience.
We remain committed to providing an engaging and supportive mathematical learning environment that empowers our children to become confident, articulate mathematicians.
We have more maths fun planned for next Friday as we celebrate NSPCC Number Day! We invite everyone to join in with the fun by dressing up as your favourite digits.
All numbers are welcome as we focus on the joy of numbers throughout the day. Remember, we’re also raising money for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), so please bring in a £1 if you choose to dress up!
Let’s make it a fantastic day filled with creativity and learning!
This week, our Geography curriculum in Year 2 has involved our children exploring the concept of journeys through a hands-on local area investigation.
The children ventured out from our school, walking through the tunnel and into the nearby woods, transforming our classroom learning into a real-world exploration. During their walk, they actively engaged with their environment, capturing photographs that highlighted both human and physical features of our local area.
Their journey took them to Barrett Gardens, where they saw an unexpected world of wildlife. The children were thrilled to observe a range of local wildlife, including ducks, robins, squirrels, crows, spiders and a other fascinating insects.
What made this experience particularly special was how it helped to connect our Geography and Science curriculums. As we're currently focusing on habitats in Science, this outdoor experience provided a perfect context for understanding how different animals live and interact in their natural environments.
Our young artists dived into a fun-filled adventure with watercolour painting this week, making the most imaginative Messy Monsters you could ever dream of!
They started by dipping their brushes into water and picking out bright colours. Then, using straws, they blew the paint across their pages and it was great to see the unique monsters taking shape. The classroom was full of excitement as each child created their art pieces.
Once the paint dried, they added eye stickers to give their monsters personality. In the final touches, their imaginations ran wild as they designed arms, legs and facial features, making each monster truly one-of-a-kind. The children were so pleased to show off their monsters at the end of the session.
Well done, Creative Club!
Our wonderful Year 1 children have been exploring the fascinating world of the Space Race.
During their recent topic, the children enjoyed learning about this moment in history. They began by making predictions about who they thought might have won the Space Race. To bring their learning to life, the children carefully coloured in flags representing the key nations involved in this period of exploration.
The children then transformed their flags into paper aeroplanes, adding a practical and fun dimension to their historical learning. The lesson turned into an exciting 'Space Race', where our children got to race their handmade planes against each other. The classroom was filled with excitement, laughter, and the pure joy of learning.
These moments remind us how learning can be both educational and enjoyable for our children.
Our Argentina class recently had an amazing adventure during their very first Forest School session! The children stepped outside with so much curiosity and excitement, ready to embrace every moment. It was inspiring to see them working together, exploring nature and learning through hands-on experiences.
Learning outdoors gives our children a fantastic chance to develop skills that go beyond what they usually learn in the classroom.
Through Forest School, they’re not just having fun; they’re learning teamwork, problem-solving and how to truly appreciate their environment. The joy and excitement on their faces as they discovered new things really highlighted the magic of experiential learning.
We’re looking forward to our next Forest School session on Monday 2nd February and we can’t wait for more adventures!
The final filming session was a remarkable moment for our school, with three of our most dedicated Eco Warriors taking the lead in interviewing Mrs Clarke and Miss Ibrahim. During these interviews, they explored some exciting new eco-friendly initiatives that will soon be transforming our school environment.
Watching these children step forward with confidence and curiosity was truly inspiring. Their commitment to understanding our school's environmental strategy was evident in every moment of the interview.
The entire filming process has been a fun and rewarding experience for everyone involved. Our Eco Warriors have shown dedication, working tirelessly to document and communicate the important environmental work happening at Alexandra Primary School.
Stay tuned for the final film, which we're excited to share with our entire school community very soon!

Over the last few weeks, our contractors have been making significant progress on the outside area of the caretakers house.
The outside area is truly transforming beautifully. We now have a brand new climbing frame installed and I'm pleased to report that the playground surface and planters are now in place. The next exciting stage of this development will involve our children and staff working together to choose the plants that will bring life and colour to this lovely area.
We are all looking forward to seeing how this space will develop and the opportunities it will create for our children.
Stay tuned for more updates.
