Welcome to another packed edition of our school newsletter and a look into what has been happening at Alexandra. Last week we took part in Anti-Bullying Week, with the theme 'Power for Good'. Through assemblies and class discussions, pupils explored how kindness helps to create a welcoming and supportive school community. Our Playground Champions led activities across the week, including helping younger children make friendship bracelets and encouraging positive playtimes. Their leadership and enthusiasm made a real difference and we are very proud of them.
One of my highlights of the last two weeks was seeing the school choir perform in the centre of Wood Green. The children sang beautifully, and we attracted some very enthusiastic spectators! One passer-by commented that it had “made her day” to hear the children singing. It was a wonderful moment of community spirit and I was very proud of them.
Looking ahead, we are preparing for our Winter Fair on Friday 5th December. To support the event, children may wear non-uniform on Friday 28th November in exchange for bringing a tombola prize. Suitable donations include chocolate, biscuits, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. This stall is always one of the most popular, so please donate generously next Friday.
We look forward to seeing many of you at the fair and thank you for your continued support.
This year’s Anti-Bullying Week was a truly inspiring celebration of kindness, courage, responsibility, and curiosity. With the theme “Power for Good”, our school came together to show how small actions can make a big difference.
The week was a shining example of our school’s values:
Kindness: shown in every friendship activity.
Responsibility: as students took ownership of spreading positivity.
Courage: standing up against bullying and celebrating differences.
Curiosity: exploring creative ways to express anti-bullying messages.
It was a fantastic week that reminded us all of the importance of using our Power for Good every day.
We kicked off the week with Odd Sock Day on Monday, reminding everyone that we are all different and that our uniqueness makes us stronger together. The playground was full of bright, mismatched socks and even brighter smiles!
Our Playground Champions led the way throughout the week, organizing special friendship activities to encourage teamwork, inclusivity, and respect. Their energy and dedication helped create a welcoming atmosphere where every child felt valued.
Classes worked hard to design creative and thoughtful posters for our Anti-Bullying Poster Competition. The entries were full of powerful messages about standing up for one another. Congratulations to our top 3 classes: 3rd place went Chile Class, 2nd place went to Costa Rica Class and First place went to Nicaragua Class! You will soon be able to see the top three posters displayed at the front of the school.
This week, Alexandra Primary held a special assembly focused on Hurricane Melissa, aiming to raise awareness among our children about the impact of natural disasters and the importance of kindness and responsibility in supporting those affected.
During the assembly, children learned about the effects of hurricanes on communities, the challenges faced by families during these events and how people come together to rebuild and support one another.
The assembly aligned with our school values, inspiring children to think beyond their immediate environment and consider how their actions can make a positive difference.
We are proud of our children as they showed courage and curiosity throughout the assembly.
We are thinking of those affected by the hurricane and wish them all the best as they face this challenge. If you would like to support those affected, please consider donating to donations@worldcentralkitchen.org / https://donate.wck.org/give
Last week, our pupils participated in thoughtful Remembrance Day activities, reflecting on the significance of this important occasion. The children took part in a whole-school assembly, observed a two-minute silence, wrote poems and created artwork to remember and reflect on the meaning of Remembrance Day.
They made and wore traditional red poppies alongside specially coloured ones, each representing different aspects of remembrance:
Black poppies to honour the Forgotten Heroes
White poppies to remember the impact of war and express a hope for peace
Purple poppies to remember the animals who suffer during conflict
These meaningful symbols helped our pupils deepen their understanding of the sacrifices made and the importance of peace around the world.
This year, our whole school came together for a special assembly to learn about Children in Need and the importance of supporting this vital cause. During the assembly, we also hosted a lively Alexandra Staff Bake Off, with our School Council proudly acting as judges. The winner of our Bake Off was Ms Leanna Oomajee, our School Business Manager.
The day was filled with fun and excitement, made even more special as everyone wore their pyjamas and donated £1 to support Children in Need. To finish the celebrations, the delicious cakes were sold at a special staff cake sale, raising more funds for the charity.
We are incredibly proud of our school community for coming together to make such a positive difference!
Colombia class had so much fun at Hornsey Fire Station recently!
The children stepped into the shoes of real life firefighters. They listened to the alarms, pretended to drive the big red fire trucks, tried on the firefighter gear and even had a go sliding down the fireman’s pole!
It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and teamwork in action, we might just have a few future firefighters in our midst!
A big thank you to Hornsey Fire Station for hosting us and providing such a memorable and inspiring experience.
What an exciting day we had visiting the beautiful Wallace Collection! We started our journey with a train ride all the way to Bond Street, full of anticipation for what awaited us. When we arrived, we were amazed by how grand and elegant the museum was, it felt so posh!
Inside, we explored stunning paintings and even tried our hand at sketching some of our favourites in our mini art booklets. Many of the artworks were portraits, which linked perfectly to our recent learning in art. One of the most exciting parts of the visit was discovering the incredible armour displays — they were fascinating to see up close! We were also fortunate enough to try some on!
It was a fun-filled, inspiring, and unforgettable day for everyone!
The INTO Film Festival is a free, annual, nationwide celebration of film and education for 5 - 19 year olds.
At Alexandra, Years 1 - 6 are participating this year by visiting local cinemas. Last week, Year 6 enjoyed Kensuke's Kingdom at the Vue.
It was particularly exciting as we were also wearing spots or our pyjamas to mark Children In Need Day.
Schools Go Green with the Help of Our Eco Warriors
Alexandra Primary is delighted to be one of four Haringey schools participating in Collage Arts' Schools Go Green project, where we are exploring ways to reduce our school's carbon footprint. Through this initiative, we are partnering with the nationwide charity Let's Go Zero, which supports schools across England in their journey to achieve carbon zero.
Our Eco Warriors have been enthusiastically taking part in Collage Arts' creative workshops as part of the project. We look forward to sharing their exciting work with you in the coming months. The photos below capture our Eco Warriors fully engaged in the workshops, having fun while learning.
In the meantime, we would love to learn more about the everyday choices families at Alexandra Primary are making that may impact your carbon footprint. Please take a moment to complete this quick and easy 3-minute survey. Thank you for your support!
We are proud to share that 35 members of our wonderful Alexandra Choir took part in the festive celebrations by helping to mark the switching on of the Christmas lights in Wood Green.
It was a joyful occasion and a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to contribute to such a special community event.
Well done to all the children involved for representing our school so beautifully!
Despite the inclement weather, Year 6 braved the elements to visit the National Army Museum in Chelsea. During the trip, pupils took part in an engaging workshop about the Blitz, learning about the vital roles carried out by those who remained in the UK during World War II.
They also explored the exhibition Beyond Burma: Forgotten Heroes, which highlighted the contributions of various armies involved in the conflict.
This visit connected beautifully with their current learning, especially complementing the themes in the book The Lion Above The Door by Onjali Q. Rauf. It was a memorable and valuable experience for all involved.
We love music at Alexandra. We are excited to announce that Haringey Music Service are now providing one-to-one and group lessons at Alexandra Primary School on a Monday morning.

This term, my focus in writing at Alexandra has been on spelling and grammar. We are currently using the Spelling Shed scheme, which is already helping students learn new spelling strategies. Although we are still embedding the scheme, I believe it is the best fit for our school community and the staff seem to agree.
I’ve also been developing my understanding about the importance of teaching grammar and sentence structure from the very beginning of a child’s school journey. The new writing framework emphasises that writing is a complex skill that involves handwriting, spelling, sentence construction, and spoken language. It highlights the vital role of the Reception year to build key foundations, the need to make the teaching of sentence composition more explicit, and the importance of focusing on quality over length.
We are committed to developing confident writers and creating a positive writing culture at Alexandra, in the hope of giving our children life long success.

We’re excited to be launching our new library software system and are looking for parent volunteers to help us get everything set up. The role will involve adding barcodes to books and registering them onto the new system.
Our staff and Reading Ambassadors will be on hand to guide and support you throughout the day. The session will take place on Monday, 1st December, and we’d be very grateful for any time you can give.
If you’re able to help, please let your class teacher know — your support will make a huge difference in helping us improve our school library for all our children!

This week the children have been busy creating some beautiful Christmas artwork at school. These masterpieces will be transformed into cards and other products that you will have the opportunity to purchase.
There is no obligation to buy, but every purchase helps raise funds for the school. The money will go towards providing more opportunities to develop arts and crafts across our classes.
You will soon receive an email with details on how to place an order. Purchased items will be delivered to the school and sent home with your child.
Thank you for supporting our children’s creativity and the arts at Alexandra Primary!

This exciting Panto in a Day promises to be a fun and memorable experience for every child.
As the weather turns colder, it is essential that all children come to school dressed appropriately to stay warm and comfortable throughout the day. Please ensure your child brings a warm coat especially during outdoor playtimes and journeys to and from school.
We understand that for some families, providing winter clothing can be a challenge. If you need any support in obtaining a warm coat or other winter essentials for your child, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
Thank you for your help to keep all our children safe, healthy and ready to learn during this winter season.
As we approach the holiday season, we want to remind all parents and carers of the vital importance of regular school attendance for your child’s learning, wellbeing, and future success. Every day in school counts towards your child reaching their full potential.
Please remember that holidays taken during term time are unauthorised and may result in a Fixed Penalty Notice (fine) being issued. We kindly ask that you plan family holidays during school breaks to avoid any disruption to your child’s education.
Thank you for your ongoing support in ensuring your child attends school every day, on time, ready to learn.
