Auditory Processing

Common Difficulties:

• Difficulty comprehending oral language

• Difficulty making out the teacher's voice against background noise

• Difficulty learning vocabulary presented orally

• Difficulty with group work

Accommodations/Strategies:

• Provide opportunities to explore and manipulate sounds, words, and language

• Listen to books on tape while looking at the book

• Allow only one person to speak at a time

• Have student repeat back directions

Common Difficulties:

• Poor spelling

• Difficulty learning math facts

• Difficulty remembering words and sounds within words

Accommodations/Strategies:

• Present information multimodally

• Use lists, notes, checklists, etc.

• Teach chunking strategies

• Allow the use of a number line and/or calculator

Common Difficulties:

• Difficulty filtering out background noise

• Difficulty in group work

• Difficulty understanding directions in busy environments such as the lunchroom, playground, or hallway.

Accommodations/Strategies:

• Provide a quiet environment

• Monitor cooperative groups to ensure only one child speaks at a time

• Provide visual or written supports to instruction given orally

Common Difficulties:

• Articulation errors

• Problems with oral drills

• Inability to hear different sounds in words (affecting spelling and reading)

• Difficulty paying attention in class

Accommodations/Strategies:

• Use decodable texts for daily practice

• Assistive technology (i.e., immersive reader)

• Read books that use rhyming words
