Supporting Emergent Bilingual Students with Knowledge Walls: Creating Inclusive and Language-Rich Classrooms
My name is Mercedes Sanchez. I’m originally from Argentina and made the big move to the United States back in 2000. A few years later, in 2004, I found my home in Houston, a city that’s become very close to my heart. I graduated from UH main in 2012 and I obtained my Masters from UT Arlington in Curriculum and Instruction in 2022 and a Masters in Educational Leadership in 2024. Spanish is my first language, and learning English was a journey filled with challenges and growth. That experience gave me a deep understanding of what bilingual students face every day in the classroom. It’s why I’m such a strong advocate for bilingual education, I’ve lived that experience, and I know how much support it takes to truly thrive.

I love being a teacher and am passionate about every aspect that comes with the role. One of the most rewarding parts of my job is being an EB (Emergent Bilingual) teacher, where I get to support students as they adjust to a new country and language, helping them grow academically and personally. I take pride in creating a welcoming and enriching environment that empowers my students to succeed. I had the honor of
co-presenting at the SEED conference alongside Mr. Benjamin Bannon, who was the Instructional Specialist at Raymond at the time. That experience allowed me to share my passion and ideas with others while learning from fellow educators. Even though the conference was fully virtual, I truly enjoyed the opportunity to network and collaborate with professionals who share the same drive for educational excellence.
