Operation Special Delivery began many years ago as a way for Aldan residents to send greetings to friends and neighbors who were serving our country and who could not be home for the Holidays. That project, started by the our partners in the Aldan Civic Boosters, has grown into Operation Special Delivery. Over the years, the program has grown and changed. Today, we have partnered with the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center at Cape May, New Jersey. Cape May is the only "boot camp" for the Coast Guard. Each year, there are several hundred young people in various stages of training over the Holidays. Post 1000 works with the Enlisted Association at Cape May and many other service organizations to make sure that recruits have a memorable Christmas morning. In addition to sending some small presents for their Christmas stockings, we gather cards and greetings for the recruits.
Take a minute to write out a card for a recruit.
Hand made cards or cards with drawings (from kids of all ages) are really popular.
Greetings like "Coastie", "To One Who Is Serving, or even "Thank You For Your Service" are all good.
Tell them a little something about your Holiday memories or plans.
Let them know if you or someone in your family is or has served in the military.
Wish them well.
Sign your name and hommetown (eg John from Aldan, PA or Mary from Delaware County, PA). They love to know where the cards come from.
Remember that the recipents are recruits in boot camp. NO GLITTER PLEASE (it drives the drill instructors crazy). No envelope is needed. It cuts down on clean-up time and waste.
You can drop your card or cards in one of our special mailboxes in front of the Post or in front of the Aldan Municipal Building.
Groups are encouraged to participate.
You will also find us out at some of our favorite local eateries. We'll set you up with a card and a pen and/or crayons. While you're waiting for your dinner, send a greeting. Our next event will be at Miller's Springfield Ale House on Friday, December 13. 2024, starting at about 5 PM.
If you need more information or would like to arrange for a pick-up, please write to us at mail@aldanlegion.org or call us at 610-506-0007.
