What does McKinney-Vento mean?

McKinney-Vento is federal legislation that puts into place protections for students and families experiencing homelessness or the risk of homelessness. 

What defines a homeless student?

Students who are considered to be homeless "lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence". This includes children or youth who are living in motels, hotels, camp grounds, transitional shelters, parks, cars, or any nighttime residence that is a public or private place not meant to be used as a regular sleeping accommodation. What resources are available to help families in transition?

NEMSCA - call 211. NEMSCA can help with housing resources, budgeting, getting back on top of heating and water bills, etc.

Compass North - Compass North can help students obtain vital records, walk through the process of getting food cards, establishing a host family for unaccompanied students, and more. The Agency 24 hour line is 989-464-3799.

Community Mental Health - counseling services made available in the community. Alcona also has three full-time therapists on staff at the school to help students walk through difficult times. To request services call 989-356-2161.

Kinship Care - resources to help adults age 55 and up who are raising relative children. Call the Alcona County Commission on Aging 989-334-3470.
