Claw Academy

Alternative Opportunities

The Alcona CLAW Academy is an alternative program designed for 11th and 12th grade students who have not been successful in a traditional school environment or are looking for another option to fit their life circumstances. Our CLAW Academy students have full schedules just like our face to face students. The bulk of students' classes are online classes, however opportunities to earn credit are also available through work-based learning, and CTE.

The Environment

Our CLAW students meet in the CLAW Academy Campus across the street from the High School. Breakfast and Lunch are transported to the CLAW Academy Campus for our students. Students work at tables on their online classes and regular breaks are scheduled during their day. There are two supervising adult mentors to help students with work and to stay on pace with their classes.

The Expectations

Each CLAW student is assigned to a Tier of attendance based on their past performance and ability to stay on pace in their classes. Each student starts out attending all four days a week (Monday through Thursday), but can earn attending fewer days by staying on pace and performing well in their classes. Students are expected to communicate weekly with their Alcona mentors regardless of how many days they are required to attend.

The Application Process

Students must be current Alcona students and apply for acceptance in the CLAW Academy program. Students must fill out the Alcona CLAW Academy Student Application and the Alcona CLAW Academy Student Contract. Acceptance into the program will be determined by a committee and will be based on the student's past success with online courses, attendance, behavior, support at home, and other factors. If accepted into the alternative program, all parents/guardians and students will be required to attend an orientation meeting. Failure to follow the contract will result in the student being removed from the program.  Application materials can be found on the school website

The Benefits

Students who are accepted into the CLAW Academy are still a part of Alcona Community High School. They can participate in the same sports and clubs as our traditional students. CLAW students can earn a more flexible schedule that will fit with their life circumstances, such as the need to work. They can also participate in CTE options as offered through the high school.
