Career and Technical Programs

Why Take CTE Classes?

Taking CTE classes gives students the opportunity to gain real-life skills that can be applied in the real world job market. Students will:

  • be provided with the opportunity to earn industry recognized certifications

  • have the opportunity to participate in a Career & Technical Student Organization (CTSO) or other leadership training

  • have the opportunity to gain college credit through articulation agreements. Click here to see what credits you can earn.

  • Program completers earn their 3rd science credit and fulfill the second year world language credit requirement. CTE classes can also be used to earn Fine Art credit. Additional credits earned in each program are described below.

  • To complete a program, students must earn a 70% or better in each required class for the program.

Agriscience, Alcona

Alcona students earn science credit in hand-on, outdoor learning experiences. Students have the opportunity to earn small engine certifications and college credit through the course sequence. A To complete this program, students must successfully complete Biology in Agriscience and either Service and Learning in Environmental Science or Ag Mechanics. Taking Advanced Agriscience requires instructor approval. Biology in Agriscience earns Biology credit, Service and Learning and Ag Mechanics counts for the 2nd science credit. Any course may be used to earn the 3rd science credit.

Marketing, Alcona

Students learn marketing and business skills in a hand-on experience. Alcona's Marketing program can begin in the students' freshman year. Course sequence is Intro to Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Intro to Business Management, and Business Leadership. Passing Intro to Marketing both semesters earns Economics credit and higher level classes earn Senior Math Credit when taken in the senior year. To complete this program, students must complete Intro to Marketing, Entrepreneurship, and Intro to Business Management. Students in Business Leadership run the school stores – this class requires instructor approval.

Auto Technology, Alpena

This is a two-year sequence for 11th and 12th grade students, which provides preparation for entry into the many fields of automotive industry. This class provides an excellent background for many college level automotive programs and opportunity to earn industry certifications. Passing both years of this class earns credit for Algebra 2, Senior Math. To complete this program, students must successfully complete both years of Auto Technology. Successful completion of both years also earns credit for Algebra 2 and senior math.

Business Management, Alpena

Students learn every aspect of creating a business beginning with the initial concepts to the development of a complete business plan. Learn about the current business structures, presentation strategies, management practices, and laws. Students will use current computer software and have the opportunity to earn industry certifications. To compete this program, students must take the three required semester-long classes: business applications, business essentials, and personal finance.

Construction Technology, Alpena

This is designed to prepare students for employment in the construction field. Students learn to use the equipment and technology as it applies to laying blocks, framing, roofing, siding, trimming and finishing a structure. Students will build a house from foundation to completion on a real job site. A passing grade in both years earns credit for Algebra 2 and senior math. To complete this program, students must successfully complete both years.

Health Occupations, Alpena

This is a two-year sequence for 11th and 12th graders. Students will be introduced to a broad base of knowledge and skills such as basic medical terminology, growth and development, nutrition, roles of health care careers, job shadowing at community sites and earn safety certification. The second year class will cover vital signs, anatomy and physiology, First Aid and CPR certifications, patient care and monitoring and job ready skills. Numerous skills will be practiced with an option of obtaining a Nurse Assistant State Certification at course completion. A passing grade for the first year will also earn Health credit. To complete the program, students must successfully complete the both years of Health Occupations.

Informational Technology, Alpena

Students will explore technologies in the field of visual communication, digital media, web design, and coding. Student will use current Adobe suite, web design, and coding software to develop creative design, online communication, and data management. Students will use current computer software and have the opportunity to earn industry certifications. To compete this program, students must take the three required semester-long classes: Technet (web design), Microsoft Applications, and Digital Media and Illustration.


Mechatronics, Alpena

Mechatronics & Design Lab is a unique program that incorporates math, innovative, and critical thinking and engineering along with hands-on training in design processes. Students will learn Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM), electronics, robotics, equipment controls and sensors, programming, hydraulics/pneumatics. Additionally, students can shape woods, metals and other materials on machines such as lathes, mills, grinders, drill presses and band saws manually and through the sophisticated application of computers. To complete this program, students must successfully complete the one-year course. When taken in the senior year, this class earns Senior Math credit.

Teacher Academy, Alpena

This program is intended for college bound students interested in any career related to teaching or other school support services. Students will apply what is learned in classrooms at the elementary and junior high schools in the area. The Academy pairs future teachers with a mentor teacher to provide experiences in all aspect of school-related activities. Students will be exposed to a variety of current topics in education as well as legal and ethical school issues. This gives students the opportunity to decide whether an education-related occupation is for them. To complete this program, students must complete both semesters.

Welding Technology, Alpena

This is a two-year sequence for 11th and 12th grade. Students will become familiar with the knowledge, tools and equipment used in manual and semi-automatic welding processes. Students will start using welding simulators and progress to the welding floor. Students have the opportunity to earn college credit and industry certifications. A passing grade both years earns credit for Algebra 2 and senior math. To complete this program, students must successfully complete both years of Welding Technology.
