Can my child bring their cellphone to camp? Yes, students can bring cell phones to camp. The students will keep their phones off and turn them in to their cabin leader every day. Cabin leaders will allow students time in the morning and/or evening to turn on their phones and call their parents to check-in and say hello. Once the student has checked in with their parents, they will return the cell phone to their cabin leaders. Cabin leaders will make sure that all cell phones stay charged and safe throughout the week.
Can my student use your cell phone for pictures? Can they bring a camera? The students will not be allowed to use their cell phones for cameras. Students who want to bring a camera may do so at their own risk. The school and staff will not be responsible for any damage or loss of any camera and camera equipment. Also, remind your student that this will be one more thing for them to carry and remember to take to and from each activity. Pictures will be taken by a staff member and their will be a place where parents can view and keep updated on how their students are doing. Therefore, it is easier to just keep cameras at home and download any pictures you or your student may want from the pictures uploaded. Info about where and how you can see pics and updates will be coming soon.
How do I get a hold of my child if needed? Parents may call the school at (909)989-2804 during school hours. If the parent needs to call after school hours, please call Alpine Retreat and camp at (909)337-3800. The school and camp have the cell phone numbers of all ALCS staff that are at camp with the students. The staff will be notified if a parent needs to speak with their student and will make sure the student calls the parent as soon as possible. The school's phone number is (909)989-2804. Please try to limit your calls to emergencies only. The staff will do their best to make sure each student calls, text, or leaves voicemails at least once a day. Remember, if you don't hear from the school, staff at camp, or your student, it's probably because they are having too much fun (as this always is the case).
Does my child need money at camp? There is a gift shop with a coffee bar at camp. The students will be able to access this shop during camp. T-shirts cost around $20-$30, sweatshirts - $50-$60, and drinks - $5.50. $75 should be plenty if they would like a sweatshirt and a couple of drinks.
Sweatshirts and T-shirts purchased at camp - Sweatshirts purchased at camp may be used as outerwear at school for all middle schoolers who attended camp. T-shirts bought at camp can be worn on spirit shirt and jeans day. It is suggested that the student purchase a size up or two so that the sweatshirt can be worn at school for a couple of years. Younger siblings are not allowed to wear Alpine Retreat and Camp sweatshirts or t-shirts purchased by their older siblings.
What is the food like at camp? Well, it's camp food. Alpine is known for making kid friendly food taste pretty good. The camp is notified of all allergens, dietary restrictions, special diets, etc. before we arrive. We also maintain our no nut policy at camp. The chef and her cooks are very good about making sure everyone has access to a balanced meal.
Can I send my student(s) with snacks and games? Yes, you can send snacks with your student as long as they are nut free. Your student will have to keep all snacks in the cabins as they are not allowed to take snacks along with them during activities. In some circumstances, students may take a snack or two with them to the dining hall at meal times. We will be having break times throughout the day which will allow the students time to go to their cabins and have a snack if needed. Meals usually fill up a hungry camper so they should be good between meals. As for games, the school has purchased games for each cabin. Mrs. Martinez will be taking up all games with her and will distribute them between all 6 cabins. Teachers/cabin leaders will make sure to rotate games as necessary. Therefore, campers SHOULD NOT bring any games with them. It is one less thing for them to carry as well as one less thing for them to lose.
What is the dress code for camp? Students have free dress the whole time we are at camp. Remind your student that we will be in the cold forest so long pants, like jeans, and a comfortable pair of shoes is highly recommended. Also, a good pair of crew socks - not ankle socks, no-show socks, or thin socks - are also recommended to protect ankles and feet from bug bites and other plants and such that can bother the ankles / feet while hiking. I personally like the Hane’s brand of crew socks because they are a little thicker and keep the feet dry and comfy throughout the day. Also, girls are allowed to wear leggings as long as the top they wear with the leggings covers their bottom and is loose fitted. At night, students may want to change into some comfortable and warm sweat pants and a sweatshirt and/or jacket depending on the weather. Warm mittens or gloves as well as a beanie or warm hat may also be needed in the evening hours. Don't forget to label your students clothing just in case they get misplaced - and yes, even the undies should be labeled - don't ask LOL!
