The Pirate Collaborative
A PROJECT-BASED OPPORTUNITY SOLVING REAL PROBLEMS WITH REAL SOLUTIONS
Hi, I'm Matt White, Lead Teacher for a progressive initiative at Alburnett CSD, called the Pirate Collaborative. Our mission within the Pirate Collaborative is to bridge students and local businesses in a mutually beneficial way. Businesses pitch projects around problems they face organizationally, while students take on those projects and together with the business, develop viable solutions.
I'm originally from Worthington, Iowa, growing up on a farm as the youngest of five kids. In July of 2019, I married my wife, Bailey Wright, who is a Teacher Development Coach and Special Education Teacher at Alburnett. I received my undergraduate and graduate degrees from University of Northern Iowa. At Alburnett, I've been fortunate enough to work with students spanning grades 6-12. Subjects I've taught include: World Geography, US History to 1877, American Government, Engaged Citizenship, and Ancient Civilizations.
I'm passionate about, and committed to, developing the relationships necessary for challenging the status quo with students and staff. Through our work in the Pirate Collaborative, we're working to harness, practice, and refine the skills required for solving the problems of the future, such as workplace soft skills and mastery of the design process.
