TREATMENTS FOR EATING DISORDERS

HOW CAN EATING DISORDERS BE TREATED?

Treatments for eating disorders depend on each person’s symptoms and on the severity of the disorder. There is often a team of doctors who help the patient and they are: medical doctors, nutritionists, and therapists. The support of the patient’s family is also important.

There are many types of treatments:

MEDICAL TREATMENT:

medications can be used to cure mood or anxiety symptoms or to reduce binge-eating and purging behaviours.

Hospitalization may be necessary in some cases.

PSYCHOLOGICAL TREATMENT: psychological therapy is important because it allows to understand the hidden causes and negative thoughts of eating disorders and to heal from traumatic life events. It is also important to learn to deal with difficult emotions, relationship problems and stress. Therapy can be individual, with the family or in group.

NUTRITIONAL CONSUELING: nutritionists design balanced meal plans, set goals to reach or maintain a good weight.
